Default CRPS and heartburn/stomach issues?

OK, I'm new here (see my intro?)
I've been having lots of heartburn issues. The weight gain from the gabapentin was bad enough. I already am trying to eat right for heartburn. And my appetite is down (so why am I not losing weight???). But a lot of time food doesn't "sit well" and then the heartburn. And at night I'll get reflux! YUCK!

I'm taking acid reflux meds. Not helping much. How much of this is meds? Or is this the CRPS? What can I do? Bad enough the foot problems I don't need this!

Welcome Becca,

Since CRPS I have dysphasia, chronic upset stomach, reflux. I had to take Tagamet today to get through the family meal.

My opinion is that CRPS can cause internal issues. I started LDN a week ago and I am hoping it will help me get over these problems.

I also gained weight on Gabapentin, plus it gave me brain fog.

Sounds like GERD & and maybe your gallbladder? I'm no doctor but maybe follow a gallbladder diet for a while. Yogurts, fruits (berries & melons), mineral water, Coca-Cola (strange but true) veggies.. Potatoes, squash, zucchini, broccoli, etc. Stay away from high fat, high carb food (pork is horrible, mayo, butter, anything oily, greasy, fatty). Think chicken, fish like Salomon is great, rice. Add a probiotic (walgreens generic) yes, its expensive, but you want to feel better.. So splurge. You ahould take one a day everyday feel good or not. You can take two on bad days.
If your bowels are working good.. Skip this next step on antacids & stool sofners. Anyway, stay away from esomeprazole (Nexium) & grab some Pepcid. Might as well grab some gas ex (generic) & some sort of stool softener. I use Senna-S and/or Miralax. Gotta get your plumbing happy & working again. Use one Senna over night. Work up from there adding Miralax if needed. If gas pains get bad you can take a couple gas ex at once.

Milk, if you drink it, helps nerves & heartburn. Just fyi.

I hope something here helps. Best of luck! It can be an ongoing issue. I have been dealing with mine for years. Filling out paperwork now to see a real good GI doc. I've been avoiding it for a long time by treating it as described above.

Lost my gallbladder several years ago, after which certain foods became permanent no-nos (onions, garlic, so sad).
I got a probiotic going a few weeks ago, been avoiding all heavy foods, trying to eat light and healthy, etc. Thankfully bowels are moving (and w/my husbands issues I know more than I ever wanted to about getting bowels to go).

I actually am doing better on Nexxium than I was on Pepcid, lol!

I know right.. worked well for me too! The only reason I said stay away from Nexxium was b/c it has been linked to some heart issues (I think that's right). It was listed on a top 10 doctors won't take themselves. IDK.. maybe research it a little.

Sometimes heart burn /bloating/GERD can be due to low acid/slow digestion issues.
The antacid meds you take might be making the situation worse...
more info to explore-

Also you might find foods that do not agree with you when reading about the Blood type diet.. I was surprised to see foods I had a feeling didn't agree with me , sure enough they were on the avoid list for my blood type.

So here's what worked for me. I did Nexxium in the morning for a little over a week. I've been taking probiotics for a month. And as always eating small meals, non-acidic foods, etc. I'm doing a LOT better than I was!

I never had any heartburn before my injury & CRPS. Almost a year ago, I started having constant heartburn. I had an EGD & found small areas of esophageal erosion due to all the ibuprofen. I am now on omeprazole 40mg/day and no NSAID's.

I started experiencing GERD and abdominal pain after I developed CRPS. As my pain decreased, the GERD improved, but now that the pain has worsened, the GERD has worsened as well. The pain itself seems to make me nauseous and that worsens the GERD.

I'm on Nexium, but the problem with it (and other PPIs like Pilosec) is that they lead to kidney damage, so they are not recommended for long-term use, though some doctors claim long-term is 20+ years.

I have been following the low-FODMAP diet for awhile now and it helped significantly with the abdominal pain. The GERD also improved on this diet, but I'm not sure if it was because I was in less pain or because of the diet. But if you are still struggling, it may be something to look into.

Hope you find relief!
