Default Could it be an SCS problem? headache & fever 1 month after implant

Hi all, I'm new to the group & was just looking for some help. I had a SCS put in 4 weeks ago. For the past 3 weeks I've had a headache, fever & some vomiting & dizziness. I have been in the hospital twice & have had blood work, CT scans done numerous times & they have found nothing wrong. The Dr wants a spinal tap next. The only thing they saw was that there was a lot of fluid around the battery. It is still extremely sore at the battery site & my other incision. My neurosurgeon doesn't believe it has anything to do with the implant but I'm not so sure. Just wondering if anyone has had a similar problem?
Thanks so much!!

Hi Bri594,

I don't have a SCS yet, but that sounds pretty miserable. I think some of the folks here will have good input for you as eva says. I'm so sorry you are suffering.
Prayers for pain relief,

Hana

Default Headache and low grade fever

Hi there, I had my SCS put in December 17. I've always had headaches but since the stim my headaches are never ending and I have regular fevers. My temp which always used to be 36.8 is now always 37.5 or higher. I have just had another round of blood tests as they try to figure out what is going on.
I have on 3 separate occasions since the stim implant deliberately turned the stim off to see if the headache can abate some and yes, each time I turn it off the headache does reduce. I also remember I had nausea for some time but put that down to my headache and fever. What brand do you have? Mine is a Nevro Stenza HF.
I hope you can settle in with it sometime soon and you get the relief we all pray for.

Smile Hi Bri!

Welcome to the forum!
Oh dear! your symptoms are screaming 'infection'! I wonder how your doctor can think this doesn't have anything to do with your implant!
The fluid around battery could be a hematoma or something and perhaps your headaches, vomiting and dizziness are after effects from the anesthesia, but fever and pain hmmmm.
Is your headache a constant one or does it come and go? A spinal fluid leak causes bad headache. I don't know much about a SFL other than they tell people to drink caffeinated beverages and lay flat in a darkened room.

I'm glad they are gonna do a spinal tap.
A lot of neuro's don't like to admit that something may have went wrong with their 'handywork', but he needs to keep a close eye on you.
I'm sorry you are going through this.
Is your stim turned on yet? and if so, do your symptoms die down when you turn it off?
Please keep us updated with what they find out!
We care!

Rae

Heart Oh my BRI

I hope this has come under doc's keen attention! Seems something is amiss. Rae has good thoughts on the possibilities. Gotta get Doc to check, pay attention, see whether there is a reason. Gotta press this home.

Hoping and prayin,

Default Thanks for the replies:)

Thanks all.. It's 2 weeks later & I'm still having problems. I had the lumbar puncture last week & was in bed with a spinal headache for 3 days. That has thankfully went away but I still have a headache. My neurosurgeon said everything came back good with my CSF except my lymphocytes were high. He thinks I could have had viral meningitis & am getting over it but he doesn't know for sure. He told me 2 weeks ago not to charge the SCS bc of the fluid but now it's okay to charge it? He is sending me back to my pain management dr & to a neurologist as he doesn't know what is going on but he seemed pretty darn sure that it's not from the implant. My headaches do seem to get worse the longer I have the unit on. He said I shouldn't be this sore at 6 weeks out but yet I am. This is so frustrating to not get any answers!!

Heart Bri

Thanks for the update, Bri

I'm so sorry . I thought surely there would be an answer for all of this by now. With your headaches getting worse when your unit is on, your Dr is 'sure' it has nothing to do with the implant. Is he even LISTENING to you!! Grrr. I'm hearing voices in my head screaming "arrogant weenie!"
The Dr who did my implant was very arrogant. Well, hopefully your Dr has the utmost confidence in the neurologist he is referring you to.
I pray that you will get in with him soon b/c neuro's seem to have a long waiting list for some reason.
Is your unit a cervical one? or Lumbar?

Here's a site I found that refers to headaches and other possible causes:

http://www.livestrong.com/article/24...rd-stimulator/

"if" there perhaps was a small puncture made in the spinal membrane while the unit was being implanted, would maybe explain what you are going through. Since your headaches were a problem 'before' the diagnostic lumbar puncture was made, I can't help but think that there was an accidental puncture during the implant.
The good part in reading this article is that the puncture WILL heal. eventually.

I dunno, Bri, I'm just throwin ideas around. I just wish your Dr would've dug deeper into the possibilities instead of referring to the neuro.
I do pray that answers do come very soon.

I don't believe my Dr is listening to me! He says there was no puncture during surgery & seems sure of it. It's ridiculous how sore I still am around my incisions! My unit is a lumbar one. I have not been able to wear anything but sweatpants as my other pants put to much pressure on my incision. I go Friday to the neurologists & pain management Dr.
Thanks so much for the link & advice

Default yes! I believe it could be the scs

I am having a lot of problems like that too. Just had mine put in bout 8wks ago. It has gotten worse. Pain is getting unbearable! Way worse that before I had it put in. Battery site feels like something is ripping apart in there and I also have all your symptoms, but at least your drs are trying to see whats going on. My dr doesn't think it has anything to do with implant either....but I strongly disagree!!!!
