one reason...

One reason for the rice problem is that Australia has that terrible drought.

Flour and rice relations + a couple of old raisins we could make pudding!

Seriously went to the comissary yesterday on base and bought just a box of white minute rice and all of the bags of rice were gone and a sign hung over it saying the distributor was rationing and holding off of the big bag of rice shipments.....

Here's my question.....terrible economy...mortgage crisis....gas prices....rationing of rice and flour? Did I fall into the rabbit hole and go back to the Great Depression? Somebody needs to do something!

I'm just curious. Exactly WHAT ARE THEY GOING TO BE DOING WITH ALL THIS RICE AND FLOUR, especially if they continue to buy this every week.

I know that there are little bugs that creep into flour bags and rice bags.

I'm just trying to picture these big bags of rice and flour, and doing this every week.

Good Lord. lol

Well, I can tell you this.....if I have to hoard something it's NOT gonna be rice and flour!! I'll stock up on Cheetos, chocolate and frozen pizza!!!

mrsD 04-30-2008 02:45 PM

I believe

it is the restaurant owners going to the Sam's Club and Costco and buying 40
80 lb bags at a time!

Also group homes, community shelters, etc.

Then there are the survivalists... stocking up their shelters.

I use two little bags of rice every 6 mos or so. I only put it in chicken soup.

I don't even have flour in my house!

I think I've had the same bag of flour for five years!! Think it's time for a new one???

I use Success Rice - I wouldn't know how to cook regular rice if my life depended on it!!! We don't eat that much of it - otherwise I guess I'd have to learn. Who on earth (besides restaurants) uses a 40 pound bag of rice?? I mean, where would you keep it?

I'm so bug nuts, I won't have anything in my house that might harbor any infestations. So you know I don't have rice!!! or pasta. When Alan wants Pasta, I'll buy a box of Dreamfields, make the whole box, make up some tuna croquettes, and he'll eat them for 2 or 3 days. I'll freeze the left over pasta. No problem there.

What I have been making is Quinoa. It's really good. I make it lots of ways. I don't know why but the day after I had a small amount during dinner, well the next morning, my sugar was a bit higher than I would like.

Haven't had it since. I make it for Alan.

I'll try eating it again at another time. It has a nice nutty flavor (kind of like brown rice), but it's chock full of protein. And I buy the pre-rinsed kind. Don't even have to rinse the stuff. What a handy way to get protein.

Oh, I made falafel last night. Bought a box, added the water, followed directions, put a bit of oil in a skillet. Browned them on all sides, served it to Alan. He almost choked. I tasted it. It was delicious.

Boy do we have different taste buds or what?? I thought it was delicious. He said "don't ever serve this to me again. UGH!! "

lol
