We eat white rice regularly. I buy the small bags of regular that you cook. I keep it in a glass jar. We also use flour to make bread, etc. I buy like a small bag or two and I keep the one I'm using in a container. The other one I freeze. They tell you to freeze it to kill any kind of bugs that might be there. (Actually, they would be what you can't see). Anyway, we use both regularly. Also, enjoy brown rice and wild rice; small bags. I keep them in glass jars as well.

I also use flour and rice on a reg basis...also store in either jars or air tight plastic containers. My MIL is putting the flour in seal-a-meal vac sealed bags and freezing it.
I tried to talk to them today about it. They said they have been down this road before and they are going to be ready.
Flour I would miss if I didnt have it....but rice...not so much.....as for DH and DD they dont care about the rice either.

I just hope thier local tv station gives a updated report soon so they will stop the insanity......(accourding to her opinion the news station tells only the gospel)

her money, her deep freeze, her gas wasted on the trips to the store, and her energy used to bag up the stuff...... oh well..........

Hi FlyFishin Momma, Thank you for your response. Interesting. Actually, we would miss both flour and rice. But, I'm certainly not going to hoard it:icon_rolleyes: Just me but I wouldn't be going to all the trouble of putting the flour in a seal-a-meal vac bag. I don't even have one. Thanks again:)

I remember YEARS AGO, when we had a hamster in the house. We bought all the toys , the wheeley stuff, the sawdust, and the hamster food. No one told me to freeze it first. Never knew anything about hamster food.

So I bought some food in a bag and put it underneath my cupboard. And I put some of the food in the hamster cup along side the cage. I noticed that there was flies flying around.

Couldn't figure it out. Then I told someone I had a hamster. And they said "YOU DO PUT THE FOOD IN THE FREEZER FIRST DON'T YOU??" and I replied "why on earth would I put hamster food in the freezer?" and they went on to explain about the bug eggs, etc etc.

From that day on, I froze all hamster food for 24 hours before sealing it up in bags.

And now I hear you can freeze flour!!!

NO.....It doesnt freeze solid lol lol lol.....You can also freeze coffee....I do that often also.....
and I didnt know about the hamster food either so we ALL learned something new today lol lol!!!

Many MANY years ago, my son brought home a little frog in a little plastic container that he won in some bazaar.

Having never had a frog before, we didn't know what to feed it. We never told my husband that he had the frog.

So we go to the pet store and we are told the frog eats some kind of worms. They came in this small round container. The guy says "you have to keep this in the refrigerator". (Don't ask what my stomach did, but we do what we do for our kids sometimes).

So we get home, I put the little worm container in the fridge.

Alan comes home, my son and I go "look at the cute frog". Alan goes absolutely ballistic over this one inch frog. I have never seen a man lose it over a one inch ANYTHING.

He says "what does he eat?" I said 'oh you have to see this. (I hadn't told him where the worms were).

I go and get a worm, and put it in the glass container, and in front of ALL of us, this long TONGUE jets out and grabs the worm and Alan goes "oh my god, did you see that'. I thought things were going really well at that point.

I said "oh, he eats worms, but we have to refrigerate them".

Alan marches over to the fridge, opens it up and there's the little container of worms. Now I had previously looked into the container (it was all closed by the way). What I saw made me cringe.

All Alan saw was this container of worms that were next to his milk.

WELL, DON'T ASK WHAT HAPPENED NEXT. We should have been on Candid Camera, with the scene this man made in the living room.

We had to go and get Frank's friend Steven and he came and got the frog.

There has never been a frog in our house to this day.

Who knew they ate worms??

What I found was pretty much like I posted. Brown rice can be stored for 6 months under average conditions. That's because of the essential fatty acids in brown rice. Those oils go rancid quickly as they oxidize. It will store longer if refrigerated, but I don't. I just put it in a clean glass jar with a good lid and store it in a dark place.

On the other hand, white rice has the outer shell removed along with those fats. So, white rice isn't nearly as good for you:D but will store longer. Well, I love it too anyway:D If white rice is sealed in the absence of oxygen, you can store it for 8-10 years at a stable temperature of 70 degrees F. - oh my:eek:

If brown rice is stored in the absence of oxygen, it will last 1-2 years. You need to keep it as cool as possible when storing it. At say 60 degrees F. it will last probably 2-4 years.

And, as posted, flour will not freeze. When you take it out of the freezer though, you should let it come to room temperature before using it.

Coffee is another thing. I just heard the other day that if you store it in the refrigerator or the freezer (in the freezer unopened and I was going to do that), it will get moisture in it regardless and you do not want moisture in the coffee grounds before it's brewed. I just keep it in a cool dark place.

Anyway, that's what I've learned over time for what it's worth:ROTFLMAO::Excited:
