Is hubby getting any relocation help?

It's been 20 years since we left Toledo and moved to Florida. We had a 40 year old house over by MCO. First buyer failed to qualify so the house sat empty for a couple months. My wife stayed in Toledo while I went to Miami for a while.

Florida Power & Light paid for moving, 4 months storage, and 4 months apartment, so it was easy. Toledo Edison paid for my move to Toledo. And S&B moved us to Houston, so I've always had easy moves.

Have fun!

Tom

We have to pay relocating costs this time. If he'd been working 3 more months and not on furlough, they would have paid.

They even have a program where they'll buy your house if you have trouble selling it - for market value- if you qualify for paid relocating. The timing of this lay-off really was bad. Fortunately we can afford this even after 3 months out of work. A lot of people would have been in a bad way about now.

My son was supposed to close next week on a house which would have really helped, cuz he was going to take the rest of his stuff plus some furniture we don't want to keep. But that deal fell through. Wish he could afford our house.

So I'm thinking I'll do the yard sale and pack what I'm keeping, stuff that in the shed (save me the $$$ on a U Stor It). Leave the furniture in the house to show it. Dh will probably do better to pick up some furniture local for his apartment than to ship ours down anyway, just to dump it later. The only pieces he needs are the ones we don't want.

Man, i'm tired just thinkin about all this. TG I have DD's bf to help me.

This'll all be over soon though, then i'll be asking Fly Girl if she knows anything about planting palm trees.

You can use one of the PODS on demand storage units. They drop it off in your yard/driveway, you lock it with your lock, its a portabel storage unit. When you have it filled up, and ready to go, call the number, they pick it up and haul it to your next house. you can also have them store it for you for up to several years if need be. No one else has the key but you, you decide how you want the stuff packed. No hurry, put in what you can, when you can. its very handy.

Default been there, done that

We moved from Pa to NY last October. We were in our house for 25 years and had to sort through all our accumulated property and put the house on the market. What a mess. I had already moved in May and my husband stayed behind to close up the house and get it sold.

Our house hit the market about 1 week after the crash so we did not get anywhere near what it was worth. We decided to sell at the low price because it was better than winterizing the place and worrying about it until it sold.

My advise - just start anywhere and pack. Throw things away or give them away or sell them as you go along. Be ruthless. Find a real estate agent you can trust and get your house listed. Things will automatically move foreward from there.

We did not have people looking at our house while we were packing because it was such a mess. As it turned out, our next door neighbors bought the place so nobody actually toured it. We got lucky in that sense.

Good luck, keep a positive thought because it can get overwhelming.

you can also list all that stuff you want to GIVE away on FreeCycle.org its a give away site that is broken down by state then cities, so only local folks would hear about it. Lets say you have a couch that must go, you list your town, your item, and other folks email or call you to pick it up. they come to your place to get it. You can make big ol piles of stuff in your front yard and post a "come and get it" style ad. You wont believe the folks that come out of the wood work for things. its a great way to keep it out of the landfills, and pass it on.

Call the salvation army as well. They will send a truck, and haul off loads of stuff. You can write off the donation on your taxes. Remember the battered womens shelters as well. They help women who have escaped abusive relationships get a fresh start with donations of furniture, and appliances like toasters, microwaves, and TVs ...

I hung onto so much stuff when we moved. It fit perfectly in my old house, but once we got here, it was not a good match, and ended up rotting in the basement. Chuck it all, and make a fresh start! The less you take with you, the less you have to unpack or worry about in transit.

For those must save/must have items, PODS portable storage units are awesome.
