OK, I feel kind of lame for posting my stress with the system when I know some people are in a tighter situation than me on here.. I'm schizoaffective and recieving SSDI.. I'm pursuing my graduate degree in the HOPES that I will one day be able to function normally in society and get a job.. However if that doesn't happen, and I still get the degree, I am going to be in for a FIGHT with SSA when my review is up in 2015 I know.. I'm already thinking of the lawyer and medical records I will have to provide.

i fell at a strip mall about 2 months before i knew i had ms. stepped off sidewalk into a pothole. anyway yes it is for medical bills. i plan on paying off most of the medical bills asap, especially the ones that are in collections. back to the question, can i deposit this check or will the govt yank my benefits?

I found some statistics that give some kind of guidelines on what your chances are when filing a case with disability.

If you are collecting SSI, you don't receive that for months when you have over $2000 (if you are single) in assets.
If the $10,000 is for pain and suffering or replacing the funds you spent on medical treatment for an injury that is all and said and done with now, then it is now your cash and would affect SSI and foodstamps. If the settlement is for FUTURE medical expenses related to that injury, you could ask your lawyer to set up a medical trust that would not affect SSI. Are you on SSI and SSDI ? I thought I remembered SSDI questions in your past posts.
