I'm not advising against an appeal. You just need to know the risks.

Your monthly checks can be reduced based upon the onset date, so you need to find out how much your checks will be and how much they would have been in order to make an informed decision about risking an appeal. 3 years of backpay is nothing to sneeze at, although I understand that the safety of a monthly check is the important thing!
