Hello- I really need help figuring out the letter I just got. I applied for SSDI in July of this year due to worsening health issues I was born with 50 years ago. I just got a letter that my condition was severe and i was determined to be disabled as of 2 months ago. However, it also stated that they are still deciding on the "non-medical" requirements of my case and will send another letter when that is decided. I can't find any clear answers about the non-medical requirements. I worked for the same company for 15 years and went on unemployment after being let go. I only applied for SSDI when my condition began to get worse a few months ago. I have still been applying for jobs because I just don't have anyone else to help me or anywhere I could go and no way to buy medical supplies with no money coming in. I told SSDI about this when I applied. Does anyone know what other things they may be considering? The letter said not to call them with questions until I get another letter.

Michelle61,
The non-medical part was pretty much checked when you applied. This final check goes very quickly. From the SSA website Non-medical requirements for Social Security disability benefits include: Proof of age; Employment; Marital status; or Social Security coverage information. |

My understanding is that the non medical requirement is to verify you have worked enough to have put in whatever the minimum time is to collect benefits. One thing in my case is that my continued search for a job did muddle the time they set as my disabled date. They based it on when I stopped looking instead of the earlier date that the doctors suggested.

I have dealt with my health issues all of my life, but I have always been the only one holding everyone else together. I have no family who can help ME. I have had no choice but to keep looking for any kind of job I could do, no matter how bad I now feel. I thought maybe they put my disabled date as of only a couple of months ago because of the unemployment I'm receiving. I don't think healthy people understand how horrifying it is to feel so bad and so alone and not know where to go to get answers or help. I used to cry on my way home from work because I was so exhausted. I just want to do the right, honest things, and still be able to survive without ending up in the street.
God Bless! ![]() |
