Roadrunner is right.
SSD is for disabled people who have worked. A very wealthy person who has worked their whole life and then becomes completely and permanently disabled would be eligible for SSD. SSI is for people with low income. It is based on need, not on work credits. Wealthy people are never eligible for it. This is why you have to show how many assets you have. People with low income are eligible for it, even if they have never worked. Make sense?
