I was turned down in less than 2 weeks.fixing to do my appeal..My problem is I haven't worked in 9 yrs and dont have the required work credits.also turned down for ssi..not sure what my next step is..

Why were you denied for SSI? Assets too high, or you weren't found to be disabled per SS rules?

I was turned down for ssi because my husband is on disability and it was over the income limit

That explains why you were turned down so quickly. Unfortunately, if you don't have the work credits, you won't qualify for SSDI, and if you're family income and assets are too high for SSI, then there isn't a next step in terms of trying to pursue SS until age 62.

Even with medical problems..I had a lower lumbar mri .They said I have a disc bulging at L3-L4...Arthritis at every level..and Lateral Stenosis at L3-L4 and L4-L5..On the right side..

I already know I have osteoarthritis in both knees.(candidate for knee replacement but wouldn't do it because of age).Arthritis in my hips,back and ankles

It doesn't matter what your disability it. You could be legally blind which is an automatic qualifier--if you don't have the work credits you won't be able to qualify for SSDI, and if you have too much in assets and/or household income, you won't qualify for SSI. This is why I always encourage everyone I know to never work under the table or to work as a family caregiver in exchange for potential inheritance, etc.

have alot of you people worked par time for many years and were still able to get a decent amount awarded for SSDI?

the thing i dont understand is, how do some people who have never worked get disability with just their medical problems..I was told I needed 28 more credits to get approved..now that is not possible..I am 51 and cannot do some of these jobs because of my back problems and osteoarthritis in my knees,ankles,hips and back..I guess somethings we are never supposed to understand..My brother gets it.He got hurt in an auto accident and believe me he has never worked..lol

SSI is an entitlement for the poor. Your spouse's income disqualifies you--just like you wouldn't qualify for food stamps.

I don't know what your brother's situation is or what benefit he is receiving.

It is possible to qualify for SSDI before age 22 on a parent's work record. It also takes fewer work credits to qualify for SSDI when someone becomes disabled on their own work record when they're very young.

Social Security Disability Insurance may be the disability income that your husband is getting based on his work history. When you are age 62, you could get a portion of his benefit if you file a retirement claim. That is a long time. It is too bad that you and he didn't figure out how these programs worked before you became disabled because you may not have decided to stay out of the work force. You are not the first middle income stay at home mom who discovered that there is no disability program for you.
