Here is one of mine: a green velvet dress. My aunt made that dress for me, from measuring me to sewing it on her old Singer sewing machine. But there was so much more. There was a tasty lunch, a wonderful conversation, her loving words, the sound of her laughter, the cake and coffee, the dog that 'protected' her slippers and would not let anyone touch them because to him those slippers were an extention of her.
In the same way, the green velvet dress embodied her love and care. What are some of the things that became important to you? |

Thank you for starting this great thread! Oh my, I'm such a sap for "things" that hold memories, I'll probably be posting on this thread several times! I'll be back!

That pair of stilletto heels I was wearing the night we came home from the party and my bf had the brilliant idea to take his truck out on the 4 wheel trails because it had been raining. Just one pass honey he convinces me not to go inside and change... He sucked mud into the engine and killed the truck that night. We were stuck halfway down the trail, in the mud. I refused to walk back to the house with him to get the car because I was wearing those shoes and a dress. He gets back to me sometime after 4 am, realize the truck is dead (mind you my car died this same weekend). This was the night he proposed to me. In the back of the truck in the mud. The next day while we are searching for a tow truck the MP's find the truck... did I mention he lived on base at the time? Had to talk his way out of 5 violations, including trespassing on govt property. I ended up selling a mustang to one of the MPs. (I worked for a dealership at the time), we killed 2 cars in one weekend, and it was probably the best date we ever had. And that is why that pair of shoes still sits on display in my shoe rack even though I can no longer wear them.

I also have lots of "things" that have a special meaning to me.
Of course, I have a box with all sorts of school things from both my boys. I even have their first grade report cards! Two things that hold a special place in my heart are my parents Bibles. They both had the exact same Bible.....my Mom's is a little more worn out, though, and the cover has come unattached from the pages. I keep them in a plastic bag, hoping to preserve them. I think they are about 60 years old. Another is the Bible that GM presented me with when my DH passed away. It's in a wooden box that I keep on my dresser. The Bible is brand new.....unused.....and I'm sure I'll pass it on to my boys later in life if they want it. I also have my Mom's recipe box with all her handwritten recipes. I've shared some of them with my older sister but she said she'd like me to just keep them all together in the same recipe box and she can look at them when she comes to visit. I could go on and on. As I think about all the things I have that have special meaning to me I can't put just one as the most important. They all have different meanings.....all important in their own way.

My kids? I don`t always understand them, or agree with them, but we can talk, sometimes we all make sense, sometimes none of does to the other side. Certainly not perfect myself, but tried to learn from my mistakes, and keep my kids from repeating them.
My dog, only one I owned outright with out others training in mis-behavior. Not perfect but a good boy and listens, well, as well as the other kids. Hmmm? fishing tackle and tools? what else do you need?

I have an ornament that only I get to put on the Christmas tree. It was so special to my mom. It's a cheap thing...some white cornsilk with an angel sticker in the middle. It was my maternal grandmother's...I never met her; she died 7 mos. before I was born. It always meant so much to my mom to hang that ornament. I remember my mom when I hang it; she died when I was 20, and 5 mos. pregnant with my first child...34 yrs. ago. Just goes to show smoe things don't get easier with time...

I still have this dress (somewhere). It's orange, and my mother removed the little white short sleeves that looked "silly".
It was my first "store bought" dress, and I was so excited! Either my mother made my clothes, or they were handed down from my cousins. I remember my mother crying, and I didn't understand until I was older that she cried because she never thought she'd be so poor that her little girl would be thrilled to have store bought clothes. I didn't know we were poor--we were always happy, and my mother was, for the most part, content with what we had. Once in a while, though, something would hit her. Like the orange dress. Things were different then. Now I treasure the clothes she made for me more than the orange dress.
