Default Social Security set to end in 2037, will it?

http://www.comcast.net/articles/news...cial.Security/

news story I read said its set to end by 2037 because it simply cannot stand up under the weight of its current users and then add to the baby boomers and ever growing disabled and it is imploding.

What would you do without SSDI? Could you survive? Would you be able to feed yourself? I know that 2037 is a while away, and each new election screams the same thing, and I hope they fix it, but it makes me wonder. What would I do if I got a letter in the mail saying this was my last check.

What would YOU do? PLEASE I know I am going see politics bang at the door of this, but its not about left or right or center, its about EVERY administration has said this is going to end. What will YOU do?

A little scary yes?

I know I have 2 college tuitions and may be left in debt. DH and I are 55, 401k and IRAs need contributions, retirement is coming. I can't work, am dependent on SSDI. Do have a little from an inheritance. I hope everyone has some financial plan. I know saving is SO hard on a limited income, but the future does worry me. I'm lucky to have a husband with a good income, but I still plan. Hopefully house will be paid for, one expense will be gone. Everyone needs to think about the future, it is coming. (Sorry to be a downer, but it is true the future is coming.)

I'd hate to be dependent upon my kids but that might be what it boils down to.

If I had known 20 years ago how things were going to play out in my life I would have (financially) done things differently. But....hindsight is always 20/20.

I'll keep living as frugally as I do now but there really isn't anywhere else I can trim my budget. I've already gotten rid of my car. I'm a coupon queen. I repurpose everything I can. What else can I do?

Like in all difficult situations....my faith plays a huge role and it will carry me through this, too. I'm not worried.

I hope you younger ones are listening to this voice of experience. I know my kids would never let their parents suffer but I'm doing my dangest to be independent.

I'm not on Social Security, I'm on disability through CSRS (Civil Service). My husband is on Social Security. If anything happened to him, I would NOT receive any of his Social Security benefit.

I didn't get a COLA either, and two of my insurances (life and hospital) went up. I have about enough money set aside to replace my appliances when they give out. If one more thing goes up, we decide between internet and satellite tv.

We aren't really worried about 2037 (for ourselves, that is). In 2037, he would be 101. Our long term plan is to croak.

Default If it's true, I'll never stop working

As it stands now, I still have about 30 years to work. Hopefully my house will be paid off and I most likely won't be driving, so a car is out. I think that I will be able to make it off my 401k.

I don't think the government will let SS go bust. I think a class action law suit and crime would besiege our lawmakers. I've been paying into SS since I was 17. When its my time to get some of the money back that I have been paying for 50+ years, they need to give a return on my investment. I think that 2037 is the year that SS tax collection will not meet the amount needed for the estimated payouts.

Since Workers and Employers contribution to FICA now, are actually paying for the retirees of today. I see no reason that the funds will run out. Unless, of course, the contributions are mismanaged by Congress.

We'd each be 81.
