Default Unique Gifts . . .

Debbie's b-day thread made me think about this and I thought it would be fun to post some of the unique gifts we have gotten over the years.

I like practical gifts. I'm not in to jewelry, perfume, etc. But like Debbie, give me a new fishing rod (which DBF did for me one year) and I'm all pumped.

When I 1st started dating DBF ( like almost 12 years ago), he gave me a just because gift. It was a Leatherman. Oh man, I love it! I keep it in my purse and I use it all the time for all sorts of things. It may not have been a romantic type gift but for me it was awesome!

DD19 gave me pantyhose for Christmas one year. My mom took my girls out shopping to get me something and DD19 insisted that she wanted to get me pantyhose because mine kept getting holes in them. I think she was around 3 or 4 at the time.

What are some unique gifts that you have gotten?

Dh2b bought me a gun for my birthday year before last. BEST GIFT EVER!! Oh and he bought me a bed for Valentines day once. The only Vday gift he has ever given me.

When DDs dad and I were in court fighting over custody, he asked for the engagement ring he gave me. I only agreed if I got back my fishing poles and tackle.

One of my best friends gave me a rumba (sp?) when the MS first started getting bad because I was complaining about not being able to vacuum the floors.

Mom bought me tires for my birthday once. Practical gifts are awesome.

We rarely do gifts aroud here anymore unless it is for the kids but on the rare occassion we do give them it is usually something big. SO it makes up for it. I got DH2B a gun for Vday (the same year he bought the bed), and then I bought him a grill the following week for his bday.

My sister has a husband that has a philosophy that money talks. And with him it's 'least amount of money' that talks. So she has bought me strange gifts at craft fairs.

Short list: Helping hand.....a stuffed white glove on top of a broom stick handle. Potatoes in a basket....pantyhose cut into small portions and then stuffed to make them look like potatoes and put in a basket to be used as a centerpiece. drink coasters.....ceramic hamburger, patty, both side of bun, lettuce, tomato. Put it all together and looks like a hamburger but apart is a set of coasters.

I don't like choosing names at Christmas because it makes the kids think that Christmas is all about them but I was glad to get off her kooky gift list. Now if she draws my name she has a decent amount to buy something nice.

My DH doesn't believe in buying any gift. If we need anything close to any occasion it just becomes my gift. So one year for his birthday I bought him a new frying pan. When he asked what in the %%^^%$ world I bought that for him I told him we needed one and his birthday was coming up.

I always ask for practical things if anyone asks me what I want for my birthday or Christmas. I've suggested gift cards for the grocery store, pharmacy and, when I had a car, the gas station. It's just easier for them to buy a gift card and easier for me to pick out exactly what I need. Plain old money is always great, too! It's been years since I've gotten anything that I would consider frivolous.

I think the last really extravagant gift I got was from DH probably 14 or 15 years ago. It was a Dooney and Burke purse and wallet. It was for my birthday and he stopped at the mall to buy it on his way home from work.....on my birthday.

my favorite was when DH rented a VERY cool little convertible sports car for me for the weekend. He took my car out to supposedly play tennis and came home parking it in the garage. He called me out and there it was!

I spent the whole weekend driving it around with family and friends.

Ok, I just have to add this. While this was not a "gift," it was an unintentional gift of a great memory and always makes me as well as DDs laugh. I know I have posted it before but . . .

One year before Christmas, my DDs made a list of what they wanted to get me. Well, DD20 is not the best speller. I read her list and just cracked up. She wrote that she wanted to get me new "tits." She meant tights.

Im with Legs, best gift was my current gun. The one I had before was a tad bit long for my grip, and this one fits perfectly! it doesnt fit his hand, so its all mine. no sharing.

I like practical gifts too. I give mom Triple A or AARP membership dues. I appreciate a good kitchen appiance. I dont care if its not romantic. If Im the one doing the work, I want the machine or tool that is going to make it easy, but too many friends have told DH that its taboo to buy anything with a plug for the wife. Sheesh! stop helping me.

Most wonderful gift was a present from DH ands several friends. I was really sick with chemo, breast cancer treatments and really feeling sorry for myself, and didnt want to get out of bed. They got me a puppy. This little doggie needed me to get up, walk her, feed her, love her, train her and just be in the now for her. Not in yesterday or tomorrow. she needed me here and now. REally pulled me from a slump.

Oh, Dej! That just brought tears to my eyes! What a wonderful and very thoughtful gift on so many levels. Thank you for sharing that with us.

I wasnt so gracious to start with. I was angry actually. I screamed at them that I didnt need a dog! why o why would you buy me a dog?! I was upset when I had to get up, and she was so happy to see me day or night. She was housebroken in less than a week. As the days passed she worked hard to show me how happy she was to give me whatever it was I needed. And that face! that sweet face! Here she is as a puppy with her daddy. She won me over one hour at a time, and before you know it I was outside and living my life with her by my side. I trained her to be a service dog and we went to many hospitals and nursing homes so she could spread the love. What a great dog.
