Unhappy I have to take one of my furbabies to be put down

My 17 year old cat has had cancer for a while now. He can't weigh more than 3 pounds now. He used to weigh 12 pounds when he was healthy. He hasn't eaten at all for two days and doesn't want to drink.

I would never have waited this long to have him euthanized but my younger son, 20, is in complete denial about this poor cat. He is going to be very upset with me .

I'm taking my kitty tomorrow at 8:30 am for the euthanization. I will be able to stay with him the entire time and bring him home after.

I am going to tell my son that I am taking the cat to the vet to see if anything can be done for him but to be prepared for the worst.

I can't stop crying! He's a part of the family. This is just so hard but I know it's the right thing to do. Say a little prayer for us. Even my husband is crying which is unbelievable, if you know his history.

Oh, honey, I'm so sorry. I know how much you love that little fur ball. I know it's got to be the hardest thing to do but you know in your heart you're doing the right and humane thing.

Call me if you need to. Just be prepared for me to cry, too.

Lots of prayers for you and for your kitty.

I am so sorry about your kitty but believe it is a gift to be able to relieve their suffering.

I told both sons. I asked the younger one if he wanted to come with us. He said "you are NOT taking him!".

I'm afraid he's going to try to sneak my cat out of the house or hide him in the morning. I'm going to have to keep the cat, T, in my master bath tonight with the door locked.

I wish I could make my son understand. He refuses to. He said he will hate me if I take him. I hope his girlfriend can make him understand. She's staying here tonight. I know he will get over this but it's making the situation a million times harder.

I too am sorry. Saying goodbye to a much loved pet has to be one of the hardest things we're ever asked to do. I've had to make that same decision and it hurts, but I did try to remember that it wasn't about me. It was always about freeing my darling from that awful pain.

Thinking of you and your kitty.

I'm sorry to hear this Jodylee. But you are doing the right thing for your sweet kitty. They can't talk and tell you how they feel, but not eating and drinking is surely the sign your kitty wants to go home to his kitty-Mama in animal heaven.

It is a very hard decision to make. Maybe DS can come with you and the vet can tell him that it is better to let him go than to be in pain. Either way it is not going to be easy. I am still mad at my mom for taking the 20 yr old cat to be put down and not telling me. She knew I would have gotten in the car and driven down in the snow and gone with her and she knew I had just come off of steroids so she decided not to tell me beforehand.

I still drove down that night to help her bury him, even though she wouldn;t let me touch the shovel.

I wish he would come with me Legz but he won't . He is softening up a tiny bit about this but he wants our cat to die a 'natural death'. He hasn't seen how horrible it can be for an animal to die that way. He thinks that T will die peacefully in his sleep sooner or later. If only that were the way would be. Maybe we'll get a miracle tonight and he will pass on his own.
