Ok, not sure if this goes here or in the MS room but here it is. I was reading up on that swank diet so many MSers swear to. It got me looking into even more MS diets. Theres swank, MS recovery diet, atkins for MS and then some kind of caveman diet Alot of these diets have you eating lots of whole wheat products and either skim milk or no milk at all. Take these tons of vitamins but not these... ugh!! Well, I also have Celiac disease, so wheat is completely out for me. Im just not sure if any of these diets are worth diving into or not. I have radically changed my diet for CD, going completely gluten free. Any input would be greatly appreciated

Hello KittyLady,
Regional enteritis has me avoiding certain foods including wheat, dairy, nuts, red meat, poultry and most fats/oils. I've been on a modified version of the Swank diet for decades, which mostly limits fats and red meat. Coconut oil (in limited amounts), is the oil that I use and although it is considered a saturated fat, it is a medium chain fatty acid, so it is easily digested and metabolized because it acts differently in the body and digestive tract than animal sourced saturated fats which are predominantly long chain fatty acids. http://www.coconutresearchcenter.org/ It is possible to follow the Swank diet if you have Celiac disease too. Have you tried quinoa? It is actually a seed, cooks up the same as and is comparable to rice, but with a nutty taste. It is a complete protein and contains high levels of magnesium and calcium which may help with spasticity and sleep. http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/...-pasta/10352/2 Rice flour can be used in the place of wheat flour for cooking as well. These days there are even rice pastas and many gluten free products like crackers and pastas on the market. With love, Erika |

celiac.com has some wonderful folks, a message board and recipes. Several folks there have MS, and several others have different diseases. as with any diet YOU will have to modify. Coconut flour instead of wheat flour, or almond flour, or things like that. My CD DD wont use oats either or corn. Very restrictive, but she is doing great and eats well.

I do use rice pasta or corn pasta and follow a very strict GF diet. I love quinoa. Nice flavor. A vegetarian friend of mine turned me on to quinoa.
