Default Poor hubby

My poor hubby was on his way to the station to respond to a motor vehicle accident (MVA) and he rolled his ankle and heard something pop. So the Chief is now driving him to the ER, he didn't even get to respond to the MVA (there were plenty of others to go) and he is in a lot of pain! He messed up the tendons in this ankle a few years ago at live fire training, now my mind just wont shut off worrying about him. I know he'll be fine, but he can't handle being on light duty for long at all, he just can't tolerate it. His ankle is so swollen, it's got to be at least severely sprained.

Sorry guys, just venting, it's 3:30 am and my hubby is probably just now getting to the ER, it's 45 minutes away. I can't be with him because we have the kids, and I couldn't drive him because I can't drive anymore. Can't help but worry about him. No matter how hard I try not to.

Oh no !!!
Sure hope that it is just a bad sprain.

Really feel for you...not being able to be with him...and not knowing. This is definitely the place to vent and share concerns .

Sounds like hubby is in good hands.
Praying that everything goes smoothly for him at ER and returns to normal with him and at home ASAP .

Please let us know how both he and you are doing.

With love, Erika

Default Hi nemsmom

Hope your hubby just has a sprain. If it doesn't resolve, please get MRI. I failed to do that, and wound up with three torn tendons, never healing correctly, for years of painful walking. Hope he gets lots of rest and has the very best doctor. An Xray did not show the damage to my ankle. Take good care of him....ginnie

I hope he's home by now and resting comfortably.

It's awful when you know someone you love is in pain and you can't be there (physically) with them. I hope you both are feeling better this morning.

Many times a sprain is worse than a break. And it can take longer to heal. Hope it turns out O.K.

The fact that a sprain can take longer to heal and be worse is what has me worried.

It's not broken, but they told him if it's not better in a couple days he needs to go see his pcp. They put it in an air splint, but he can't bear weight on it and there is a spot that looks like there is a half of a softball under his skin. It's a good thing we had crutches here from the last time he hurt this ankle.

He did do damage to the tendons last time, I can't remember how we found that out, but I don't think they did an MRI. But the ankle never did heal properly.

He got home at 5:11 this morning. He's teaching a class today for the fire department, he's using the kids and me as tools for that. Just vitals on all of us, and getting patient history from me (feel sorry for that poor sap) . But it's classroom teaching so he can sit and use crutches when he needs to move.

My foot was black - really black and swelled and didn't look like a foot. Lots of deep tissue damage. Kept it wrapped, etc. Kept in touch with Urgent Care and I was doing everything they said. No weight bearing on it. Used the old lift and go walker to keep weight off of it as much as possible. Cannot use crutches. It took a good six weeks before I threw the walker and used a cane and an arm. Then many more weeks of that. However, after that episode I never was the same again. Never the same probably partly because of CMT That's not why I fell though.

This was one of those sprains that you cannot get up from to even hobble around. It was awful. I hope I never have that again.

When one rolls over on their ankle, quite often the outside ankle bone, which is the most distal portion of the fibula, will move in such a way that even after ligament and tendon strains/sprains have healed, that outside ankle bone is no longer able to sit in proper alignment with the other ankle bones.

This can easily be remedied with a few visits to an osteopath, a chiropractor or PT. Some other physical therapists may also offer this type of therapy. Just make sure that it is someone who knows how to manipulate and realign peripheral joints.
The practitioner will use gentle techniques to re-align the ankle bones.

This may be the most important type of therapy to have done if one wishes to obtain a full recovery and prevent future sprains; as the ankle will not usually re-align by itself (without manipulation), yet this form of therapy is often overlooked.

Not having the ankle re-aligned is often the reason why some find that the ankle "is never the same again" or "didn't heal completely" after a sprain.

Hope that your hubby's ankle heals up quickly and fully.

Thank you Erika, I will have to let him know this. It's about time for me to take the kids over to the station for his class.

This is miserable for you, I know. It's bad enough trying to deal with our own disabilities, and it's almost unendurable when those we love become disabled to any extent as well...

At least he got it tended to immediately; immediate treatment is often crucial in these types of injuries.

Hope he starts improving right away, and keep us posted! I know it doesn't do any good to say "don't worry," because of course you're going to---but try to take care of yourself as well, for your sake as well as his!
