Default My PC is dead

It had been acting up for quite a while. My SIL thinks it may need a new hard drive, as if I knew what that means and how much it costs. Anyway Staples will diagnose it for $69 and then apply that same amount to repair. I was looking on line at refurbished PCs but my family is discouraging that. I have a laptop so in a way it is a waste to get a new PC also especially when we are planning a family vacation for spring break. But I miss my office. The monitors screen is bigger, the lighting is different, it is just more restful to get in my sleeping mode. Sitting on the couch with the laptop with Pandora on my phone just isn't the same. The position my body is with the laptop gives me a real bad headache and I find that I am taking a sleeping pill more often just to relax. Yes, I can unplug it and take it into the office but it deosn't sit as high as the monitor. It just doesn't work.

some laptops can be hooked up to an external monitor. Maybe you can hook your laptop to your other computer's monitor???

I know that is a possibilty but I like my laptop in the living room. The sound system on it isn't the greatest and I watch TV episodes on it at times. I'm lazy and want a new or fixed computer. I took it to Staples today for a diagnosis

Hope it's fixable.

New hard drives arent all that expensive anymore, maybe they can replace the hard drive, and if any of your info (pictures, documents, whatever) are recoverable, they can transfer them over to a new hard drive for you?

If you have a newer TV and the right kind of cord you often can connect a laptop to your TV..

All depends on the available inputs & outputs..and you may have to change settings on the TV and/or laptop to get the best picture.

As for refurbished computers. My dad and I bought my mom a refurbished Apple Mac Mini in probably 2006 or 2007. (bought it directly from Apple, so it wasnt refurbished by some kid in a basement somewhere) At the time, I think it was about a year old model. It's still chugging along.

I know Apple computers are not the same thing as a Windows (PC) computer, but refurbished computers of any kind are sometimes pretty good deals if you get the right one.

I just looked, and HP sells refurbished models of some of their computers. Buying refurbs directly from the manufacturer like HP or Apple usually means you get the same or similar warranties that you'd get on a brand new computer. Sometimes "refurbished" just means that it was an overstock and didnt sell the first time around. Sometimes it means it was bought, the person decided they didnt want it and returned it.

My PC should be fixed this week!!!! I am so tired of having this laptop on my lap at night while I am doing my brain cool down for bed. I can't remember what they ahd to replace but it should have come in today. They will have to take the hard drive apart to replace it and then also retrieve all my pictures and other data and put it in the new one. The cat will appreciate it.

Sounds like they're putting in a new hard drive and copying your old one over. That will be almost like getting a new computer.

I think my iMac is dying a slow death. I'd change out my hard drive if it's built in monitor wasnt dying faster than the hard drive is.

I remembered now what they are doing. They were hoping that they could rebuild my operating system. My IT son in law recommended they go ahead and put a new one in. So that's what I authorized......last Saturday. I called today because I hadn't heard anything from them. They haven't even got the disk in yet! I told them that I wished they would have kept in touch with me and told me this. So he checked and said it should be in on the 14th So I still sit on the couch with my lap top on my lap, my legs not finding a real comfortable position for me to be in my wind down state of mind, using Pandora on my phone. Only good thing is that my cat likes to sit on the arm rest right beside me and in the office she is on the floor. I should have paid more and taken it to Best Buy

I've had more problems with Best Buy than any other place. They used to be pretty good, but they ruined a couple of my computers years back. One of the reasons I switched to Apple was because the Geniuses at the Genius Bar in the Apple Store seem to be more knowledgeable about their products than the Geek Squad at Best Buy.

I've also had problems with other techs from Best Buy for things like tv installations. (they ruined my wall installing a tv, which never actually got installed, stole parts of the mount for the mount my tv is on when they left, and damaged my tv)

Best Buy used to be pretty good at fixing computers. I dont know what happened, but at least at the stores I've been going to, they went downhill in service quality about five years ago. (this was back when I used to use Windows computers)

Have the people working on your computer worked on it before? Is it a computer repair business? They might have a queue of other people's machines that they have to fix before yours.

Hope your computer gets fixed soon.
