My 16 yr. old daughter has been diagnosed with TOS. We are not considering surgery at this time. She REALLY wants to continue swimming. I just want to make sure she is not causing permanent damage by continuing to swim. I also want to do whatever possible to help her keep swimming. Can any swimmers tell me what type of conservative treatment you have done? I'm thinking we can tape the shoulder during practice and she's already in PT. Maybe a brace for posture? Any suggestions would be great. Thanks!

what type of TOS does she have? I was an avid swimmer and surfer. I used to do triathlons and swam miles per week. I still have TOS and it has drastically changed my life. There is no conservative therapy that worked for me. I'm wondering if she has VTOS as she is young and athletic. Surgical outcomes are pretty good for young people with VTOS.
I wish her the best. Please let us know what happens with her. |

Does she do many other activities that use different movements than swimming, a well balanced fitness plan is best.
Also any other repetitive movements like computer, gaming or texting?? I am wondering what her most bothersome symptoms are & avg pain level if any? Types of TOS- arterial , venous , nerve , disputed ( no conclusive type or cause) , also a mix of any /all types and pec minor syndrome. TOS is so different for each of us, and different causes and complications sometimes, there's no set action plan that fits for all. There is a thread about intelliskin garments, how is her posture overall? Head aligned with shoulders, knees, hips from the side view? Or forward head and shoulders, if so posture /bodywork is a good idea. A posture brace may cause some to depend on it to do the work vs learning to be aware & fix posture on your own.
