to my friends here. sm is asking that a candle be lit for her. we were told on 2-14 she had 4 wks to live at most. she seems very close to death tonite. she is still using the potty with our help. her eyes are oozing and slits. i sat in front of her so she could lean on me (it is only position she can pee in). she was surprised she can see me and thanked me for the hug. she asked was she dead yet, and where is dad. she held on dad's hand and would not let go. she is needing all the candles so she can see the light and cross over. that's what she wants. please light one.

Thanks everyone for the prayers, hugs, & candles.
SM has had a very rough day. After we stopped the transfers to commode (on doctor orders) she was miserable and did not understand what was happening. She can't hear or see now. We ran out of the diapers before nurse came and had to use pads. Then the catheter placement was hard as she was quite swollen and this made it painful. Dad was holding both her hands and I her legs. She was struggling and in great pain. During the struggle her G tube got pulled out about an inch, then would not go back in. Nurse said it would not matter so long as it keeps draining. It is not draining so I called the on call nurse. after the G tube incident we gave her the maximum morphine dose and got the catheter in. She has been asleep since then. I am worried. On call nurse is sending Dr over early in he morning to fix the G tube. Her time left is about a week. |

wow tied, SM is a real fighter. when my dad 'left', he only lasted about 12 hours after they started heavy-dosing the liquid morphine. All tubes were removed at that point and I knew the end was near when his skin turned yellowish. Earlier that day I was still concerned about how they were going to treat his broken arm (he climbed out of bed while unattended), and the Dr. had to change my mind-set. There was going to be no repair.
I hope for SM's sake she does not go another whole week. God Bless you for your endurance. You will be glad you were there... sometime in the future. ![]() Anne

Thanks for the prayers and candles.
The hospice doc came twice today. It did not go well. First he tried to clear it by injecting saline and said, look, it's already clearing (envision him getting ready to bolt). I pointed out that when he came the bandage was dry and now soaked. He removed the bandage and tried again. The saline trickled down her belly. Then he says no problem, i'll remove it and insert a catheter. so he pulls on it and pushes it, and SM is doing her best to scream. he can't get it out so he decides he needs to talk to the surgeon who installed it. now it's about 1 1/2 inches out. he bandages it without washing it or drying it or putting on triple antibiotic and he's off. so i unbandage and do it back right. this was at 1pm. at 7pm we were calling the hospice nurse because she was gurgling and we thought she was too weak to vomit. he didn't want to come but i pointed out if it's the vomit it could go in her lungs. so he came and ruled that out, says it is her drool and caused by morphine. at midnite the bandage was soaked again and when i changed it i could tell it was causing her a lot of pain. it also looks more painful than when she had it one inch out. it made me cry to change this dressing. the doc states that to remove it she would need to go to hospital because of the type of insertion, that it can't be removed bedside. so basically instead of making her comfortable he has given her horrendous pain. instead of taking her to hospital he intends to put a drain and pump thru her nose. ![]() why didn't he talk to the other doc before he breezed in 6 hrs late and made it worse? i mentioned to him if she went and got the G tube fixed the anaesthesia would probably kill her, and she wants that. (win win) he said that's not the way they do things. the only recognizable word she made today was water and we are not allowed to give her any, because a day and a half later they have still not provided any drainage. a vet would never treat a patient like this. |

They don't have the assisted death law there do they?
But even in OR you have to go thru many steps and papers filled out I suppose before it is legal. It's so sad to hear of so much unnecessary suffering for her. My bro in law had liver/internal cancer and went quite quickly - 6 days in hospital and as soon as they said no tx would be done or help he wanted to go home. 4 days later he went in his sleep, just faded out like a burned out candle. I'll say a prayer for her to be at peace soon.
