Anyone seen this yet for a review? The trailer looks rather bland, but at the very least we're starting to get the kind of media attention we deserve. One good thing I can see right off is that unlike standard amnesia movies of the past, this one examines change in character post-trauma, not just loss of memories. Baby steps...
The Vow Here's a rather more educated write-up: CNN The Vow doctor review

I actually saw this with my girlfriend yesterday, and it was a pretty good movie regarding relationships and even how a brain injury like that would basically alter a person. I didn't know it, but it was actually based off of a true story. They mention it at the end of the credits.
Having lost consciousness before and not having short term memory for quite awhile after I was able to relate to some of the frustrations. Granted she lost information as to being unable make new memories, but I still felt that it was a good representation of how everybody struggles to get back to the point where they used to be before the injury.

I am 24, had PCS since 2006 from hitting my head on carpet covered cement. In late 2008 I was in a car accident, which added neck problems (c2-c3 minimal bulging disc, c5-c6-c7 also bulging discs), to the equation. I was knocked unconscious both times. Overall PCS has been an ongoing problem for 6 years. Current symptoms: Headache, insomnia (constantly waking up at night), dizziness, and now neck stiffness, and vision problems. I am currently seeking vision therapy to help with the visual problems. |

I was super excited for this movie....#1 because i adore both the lead actors and #2 because of the traumatic brain injury role. I felt very fortunate that i did not lose any memories other than the night of my accident until i gained consciousness in the hospital.
But i must say, i was a little surprised that it didnt show more of the aftermath of the injury itself...like the headaches, anxiety, overstimulation, etc. The only time was when she first came home from the hospital and there was a large room full of people and she was overwhelemed. I told my friend that this was how i felt everytime i was in a crowded bar or room for months after my accident. Other than that, i was kinda envious of her for not having months of debilitating headaches. But also envious of myself for remembering all the years leading up to my brain injury. If you havent read "My Life Deleted", by Scott Bolzan.....its pretty unbelievable. He had a blow to the back of the head and forgot pretty much every memory. Who he was, who his family was, who he loved, etc. He did not have a bleed, just a mild TBI with PCS. He was also previously an NFL player who most likely endured multiple sub-concussive impacts (if even full blown concussions), which just shows how fragile the brain is after already suffering an injury. Make me very grateful that i am doing as well as i am for 9 months post injury. Thanking god everyday for the strength to keep healing and moving forward in life!

Suffered a TBI with PCS on April 25th 2011 from multiple blows to the head from falling, unconscious for 12 hours with no memory of event. Hit the back of my head, and above right eye. MRI and CT negative. Symptoms included constant headaches (migraine, pressure, tension, icepicks), dizziness, tinnitus, visual changes, photophobia, fatigue, "spacing out", word finding difficulties, depression, and emotional lability. Began Healing in November 2011 after starting acupuncture and Healing Touch (a nurturing energy therapy that promotes relaxation and pain relief). I went back to work in February 2012. Ive been symptom free since July 2012. Very happy, positive, energetic and working out every day, doing yoga, and living a normal life again! I also began taking Healing Touch classes in November 2011 and completed 5 Levels of Healing Touch Certificate Program that included a 1 year mentorship to become a Healing Touch International Practitioner in June 2013. I am so pleased to offer this wonderful healing therapy to my patients, friends, and clients. |

That's sort of what I was afraid of...that this is more of a relationship movie than a TBI movie. As such, they weren't going to delve into our every day medical stuff- like the headaches, anxiety, etc. Nightnurse mentioned.
Well, great first date movie for us TBI survivors. Might as well get them used to this "stuff" from the very beginning.
