Hi everyone! Yesterday I went to my first Chiropractic Neurologist appointment. He apparantely trained with the Carrick Institute and is board certified in Neurology. Anyway, he works with his wife who is a Chinese Medicine Doctor and does acupuncture. I am so far impressed with his holistic combination of eastern and western medicine and his patience and the time he takes to know my condition indepthly is so refreshing compared to my 15 minute rushed medical visits.
So yesterday he did a full neurological examination of me. His wife also did pulse reading (chinese medicine). He said I have a sprain on the left side of my neck and its inflammed. He asked to go home and take a dosage of GABA and to soak in epson salts of 15 minutes every night as it absorbs a larger dose of magnesium more quickly as opposed to taking pills. The GABA really worked great for me. I haven't fallen asleep and had such a deep sleep in a long time since my injury and I woke up feeling very good and headache much diminished. I still feel a weird inflammation and pressure on the left side of my head but the pain has diminished. I will go back tonight for another treatment. I will receive acupuncture as well as massage in my neck area tonight. I've realized everyon'es recovery is different and I think PCS is difficult to deal with because it's our brain and not just a simple sprain or cut and so there are so many factors that are involved. I think the GABA really helped me just because I've been so stressed out and havne't had a good night's sleep in a while which of course has been contributing to my headaches and probably hindering on my recovery. I've realized that PCS really requires a holistic treatment and like Mark has said..unfortuately a quick fix won't do ![]() Anyway, knowledge is power! So thank you everyone for sharing your experiences with me and I just want to share mine with you. The doctor told me to think a larger goal I want to achieve ..not just wanting my head to stop hurting. I was thinking..I really want to get back to marathon running one day when i'm well and at that time I would definitely be running for PCS. Thank you everyoe for your support. |

With any solid head hit, the neck can easily be involved too.
There are so many muscles, bones, and vascular structures in the whole neck area, I think those need to be addressed along with the brain issues. I hope they can continue with helping you..

Great that you are getting good care. Did the gaba make you feel groggy?

What happened: Legs pulled forward by a parent's hockey stick while resting at the side of the rink at a family skate....sent me straight back. I hit the back of my head (with helmet) on the ice, bounced a few times, unconscious for a few minutes. September 11, 2011. Off work since then…I work part-time at home when I can. It has been hell but slowly feeling better (when I am alone☺). Current symptoms: Vision problems (but 20/20 in each eye alone!) – convergence insufficiency – horizontal and vertical (heterophoria), problems with tracking and saccades, peripheral vision problems, eyes see different colour tints; tinnitus 24/7 both ears; hyperacusis (noise filter gone!), labyrinthian (inner ear) concussion, vestibular dysfunction (dizzy, bedspins, need to look down when walking); partial loss of sense of smell; electric shocks through head when doing too much; headaches; emotional lability; memory blanks; difficulty concentrating. I still can’t go into busy, noisy places. Fatigue. Executive functioning was affected – multi-tasking, planning, motivation. Slight aphasia. Shooting pain up neck and limited mobility at neck. Otherwise lucky! Current treatments: Vestibular therapy, Vision therapy, amantadine (100 mg a day), acupuncture and physiotherapy for neck, slow return to exercise, magnesium, resveratrol, omega 3 fish oils, vitamins D, B and multi. Optimism and perserverance. |

I haven't heard of it. What is it supposed to do?
Congrats on getting the help you need to recover! I assume any chiropracty will be gentle? I wish I could have just dealt with one doctor to deal with my neck and brain issues!

I have recovered my cognitive function, and I've overcome severe vertigo through sensory integration therapy. Wellbutrin has helped me escape depression. I have recently had a few stress-related migraines, as well as headaches stemming from eye strain. I'm also dealing with tinnitus, lack of stamina, extreme light sensitivity, and eye pain. Diagnosed with 9 different vision issues: convergence insufficiency, pursuit eye movement deficit, egocentric visual midline shift, photophobia, visual information processing delays, accommodative insufficiency, saccadic eye movement deficit, lack of coordination, and central peripheral visual integration deficit. *First concussion: October 2010. I was pregnant and got rear ended. I associated my mild PCS symptoms with baby brain and blamed my light sensitivity on allergies and dry eyes. *Second concussion: December 2011. I hit my head on a wooden beam, saw stars but did not lose consciousness, and I had very disturbing PCS symptoms but didn't go to the doctor. *Third concussion: August 2012. I caused a car accident as a result of PCS symptoms. Thankfully no one was injured but me. My husband confronted me, and I finally sought help and took medical leave from work. My symptoms worsened, and I developed severe vertigo. *Fourth concussion: November 2012. I was riding in a car with a friend and we were hit head on by a driver who lost control of her car. I didn't have a big increase in PCS symptoms. |

There's a connection with GABA levels in your brain and migraines I think. It's a type of amino acid. I think its says there are two types of amino acids in your brain GABA and Glutamine and if there's an imbalance of one or the other it can cause headaches. So the doctor told me to try the GABA and see how I react to it -I might feel better or I might get headaches. In this case, I felt better. It also relaxes you. I think if you google it there can be more accurate information on the subject.
The chiropracter I go to, says that he won't do any harsh neck adjustments and that in my case I won't need any. Thanks |
