I have been seeing a neurologist recommended by my primary physician (who I love).
I'm not impressed by him AT ALL. He never explained even what a concussion was, the symptoms, PCS, etc., and 2 days after I saw him (the day after my car accident), I started getting increasing numbness in my face and head, bad headaches, dizziness, increasing difficulty processing information, so called my PCP who told me to go to the ER. The ER doc is the one who explained all this was PCS and told me to take it easy, not push it, not do mentally or physically taxing things - even not to balance my checkbook. This neurologist never told me any of this. Nor did he offer any suggestions on how to ease back into normal activities like work, driving, etc., and I know from what I've read that if you don't do it right you can slow your recovery. It's obvious I need to find a new neurologist and ideally someone trained in the treatment of TBI/PCS. Can anyone offer suggestions on how to go about this? I'd be most appreciative. Today was my first day back at work for 8 hours, and I am exhausted and my head is spinning.... (My accident was 2/20). Thanks. |

Hello,
I think in order to narrow things down with any recommendations we may need to know what area you're searching within. I've heard (though I haven't yet seen my own) that neurologists are just like PCP's in that finding a good one is like searching for a needle in a haystack. Good luck to you in your recovery, sorry to hear of your struggles.

About it: October 26, 2012 I fell backward on an icy parking lot at work. I was on Workers Comp for 9 months. My PCS : everyday headaches became once in a while headaches, and neck pain became manageable. Still have occasional mild dizziness, sometimes fullness in the ears, convergence insufficiency, sequencing struggles, short term memory struggles, verbal processing delays. CT neg, MRI neg. Therapies: prism glasses, acupuncture, icing neck, resting, supplementing, Elavil 20mg at bedtime. NEW: Completed 12 weeks of physical therapy and returned to work full time. About me: I'm a marketing manager, a mom with a blended family and wife to a heart attack survivor. I believe my brain injury taught me more than it cost me. I'm grateful to still be me! |

macdebbie,
I suggest you contact Dr Robert Cantu in Concord. He is one of the best. He may be able to refer you to someone closer to you if he is far away. He knows the good Boston area neuros. Please let us know what you find out. My best to you.

Mark,
Do you know anyone in Salt Lake City, Utah that is a real specialist in our condition? I sure have had bad luck getting decent medical care. In fact it has taken 8 years to get the diagnosis of PCS. I think Debbie is lucky that the E.R physician told her as much info.as he did. I have had no such luck. Thanks kindly, Brain

There is a NeuroPsych who claims to have success helping people with PCS. Corydon Hammond at University of Utah. He deals with just the psychological aspects, I think.
There have been Physicians at UoU who have done research. They have done imaging research. I don't know any specific names.

Thabnks Mark! Is that Concord MA or Concord NH? Either are doable for a consult, although for someone on a regular basis if it's Concord NH I'd want someone closer, as I live in Newburyport, MA.
Thanks again - I really appreciate the recommendation. |
