Default How do I shampoo my hair?

Every time I shampoo my hair my symptoms flare up for a few minute because of the slight shaking of my head, any tips on better ways to shampoo? Same goes for towel drying (recently have been using blow dryer)

Default Hi Mrssmith

Walgreens puts out a waterless shampoo. This can be used right out of the bottle, then gently pat dry. Hair comes out nice. I used this when I could not shower for a bit. ginnie

I had to learn to shampoo my hair and towel dry my hair without moving my head. It takes discipline but you can do it. No vigorous scrubbing or toweling.

Even if your symptoms are short, I suggest you make every effort to prevent them.

My best to you.

I still have some residual vertigo so standing in the shower and washing my hair and moving my head around can also be problematic. Sometimes I almost drop. Hanging my head upside down in the basin would be impossible. ugh

I would suggest getting a shower chair for safety, even if it's just used for when you wash your hair (or even one of those safety rails screwed into the tiles might help). If you don't have it already, try using a flexible shower head extension. Those things may allow you to keep your head still.

I'd also suggest trying a swimming chamois for squeezing the water out of the hair. They're very highly absorbent and you could squeeze rather than rub your hair and head. They're called different names in different places I think. Chamois, aqua-towel, 'shammy'.

Some days I just dread having to stand in the shower. Doesn't help in mine that the floor doesn't seem solid/stable. I know it is, but it has a little 'give' in it. I always use a rubber mat now so that I feel more stable.

Anyway, good luck with it all and let us know if you find some solutions.

I just remembered a way I reduce the head movement. Instead of scrubbing or rubbing my finger tips into my scalp, I put the heal of my hand against my head and use my finger tips to massage the shampoo into my hear. I do the same with the towel. Put a dry spot of the towel against your hair and grab the towel and your hair and pull it into the center of the part of the towel that is in your hand. It has become such a habit that I forgot that I had learned a specific technique.

It is hard to explain but I hope this helps.

Although I agree that standing, on some days is very unappealing, I know I must, so do it with lots of leaning, in the shower and while drying off.

When I have one of those days, and need to towel-dry my hair (thankfully I keep it short - military short) - I will put the towel over my head, then lean my forehead on the wall, support myself with one hand on wall, towel rack or bathroom door-knob and use the other to just take my time rubbing the whole towel thru my hair until sufficiently dry...... no head moving involved. Note: I realize this may be difficult with some who have neck problems but it works for me, just a suggestion.

I used to be a rather fast bather, but now my shower times are rather long, due to taking time with all movements.

I have a very hard time washing and drying my hair also. I only do it once every 4 days now. My hair is long and is hard to wash and dry. I have a hard time holding my hands up that high to wash and use blow dryer. I just let it dry naturally now. I wash it while in the bathtub and use a shampoo called Nioxin that does the scrubbing for you. It stimulates and cleans your scalp without a lot of scrubbing. Good luck. I know bathing is hard.
