Default hit in face

Hi All,

I am 9 months PCS, largely recovered. I was hit in the jaw on Saturday playing football. So far I have had no flare uos. dont get me wrong I have a sore jaw, still not able to oopen and close it fully, but it has shown huge improvement in afew days. I am sure my jaw will reover in less than a week. I feel as though I am mentally strong and also physically, ie doing postural exercies physical therapy to not let this affect me.

Thoughts/ tips would be lovely

Default No flare ups yay!

Glad you are OK so far.

Maybe you should have yr jaw looked at by a doc though or dentist??

I don't know .... guess that's just the mom in me thinking.

[SIZE="1"]What happened. I was in a car accident 2-23-2013, and got a mild concussion from it. I had some time off for brain rest, got somewhat better, but slipped into PCS in March 2013.

Symptoms I had: dizziness, light and sound sensitivity, fatigue, tinitis, occasional headaches and migraines,

Symptoms as of 5--2013: poor sleep, tinitis, some confusion /short term memory blanks, balance. The other symptoms are mostly gone, but flare up if I OVERdo something.

Therapy I had: vestibular

3 months in: I could drive more and for longer distances. I felt like a younger, happier version of myself and I feel so blessed to have this feeling.

9 months in and I am working full time. I do get tired, and some sound and light sensitivity from time to time, but mostly I am over most of my symptoms.
I pray every day and I m praying for your recovery.

Over a year in: I can multi task (limited) and have humor in my life. But when I am tired, I am very tired.

I am lost as to what you are asking.

My comment is "What in the world were you doing putting your brain at risk ?"

A strong hit to the jaw is no different than a hit to your head. The risk from playing football needs to be considered seriously.

Hi peter11
It's hard to believe it takes so long to recover from a concussion. Every day I wake up feeling the same. I fear I will never recover. I was in a car accident on my way to work 6 months ago and the recovery from PCS continues...I have 8 more weeks of time off from work. My job involves a lot of multitasking as well as high level cognitive functioning. I am dizzy and lightheaded every day to varying degrees. When I'm working on the computer and trying to concentrate and process information my brain goes into shutdown and I become increasingly dizzy and lightheaded. I find it difficult to talk with my family about how I'm feeling. I look fine. Unfortunately they can't see inside my brain. I wish I had a tangible picture to show them what is wrong like an X-ray from a broken bone. I was doing my vestibular exercises yesterday. It was the oculomotor:saccades. I was using 2 pencils. You have to hold the targets 12 inches apart and move your eyes quickly from target to target for 20 seconds. My 20 year old son was watching me and made a comment...."can't decide which pencil to use mom?" I have to say...it made me laugh! This has been a big test of patience for me. I was feeling a little better the week before last and pushed myself with my exercises. It backfired last week and I went backwards...ugh! I'm glad to hear you are recovered! It is encouraging. I guess continue to rest I just joined this forum yesterday for support from others with similar situations to mine. It is helpful to know I am not alone

ummm not to be bossy or anything, but playing football after a PCS isn't the best thing to be doing. Son "bumped" head during football practice. He seemed to be fine and was cleared to play...

September 16, 2011 my son collapsed on the football field due to a subdural hematoma. He was life flighted to the hospital where they did emergency surgery. At first the DR said that he thought everything would be fine. Then his brain started swelling three days later, he had midline shift to the right side cavity and then the brain herniated onto the brain stem. They did not think he would make it. They stabilized until family could come. After family got there, he began to stabilize. We were counseled to "let him go" because the brain damage would be extensive. We chose life. He was in a coma for 48 days and then a vegetative state for another 58 days. He was considered semi-conscious Jan. 5, 2012. It is now July 2013. He has no short term memory, still is now walking with a walker, and has issues with expressive language, and is incontinent.

I'd have your jaw looked at by a doctor at this point. Especially as you are not able to open and close it fully. Other than the obvious bone part of the jaw, there are also tendons/muscles that extend from the jaw to regions in your neck.

Far better to err on the part of caution and be seen at this point. Sounds like you got hit pretty hard. That being said, maybe a good idea to pay attention to any neck discomfort. Yes, can get whiplash in football too. That can be more insiduous in revealing itself.

Bro....you need to reconsider football as one of your hobbies. I'm dead serious. Just do some research on this forum, and throughout the web about how dangerous a sub-concussive impact could be. Your brain will ALWAYS be more susceptible to further concussions. My suggestion to you...is to find another hobby. I know it's hard to drop an interest you've had for so long, but this is going to protect your brain - your life. That should be high up on your priority list.

I've had to seriously limit my activities for two years. Every once in awhile I push myself to (or past the limit), but nothing like playing sports. I would never intentionally put my brain at risk for another one.

There's lots of other sports/hobbies out there. Recently, I've tried bowling and pool in mildly stimulating environments. Do you have kids? Nieces, nephews, etc. Take the kids to the park and fly a kite with them. Teach them how to build something.

Anything but football or other contact sports. I don't want to see you back on here saying you ****** up and smacked your head while playing.

I've had a couple head hits recently from my kids. They get rowdy around me and end up knocking me down with a headbutt. The results are not cool.

Good luck, hope you find a safer hobby.

What happened: I was randomly assaulted from behind in June of 2011. I was knocked unconscious for an unknown amount of time (less than 30 minutes) and have no memory of the event. CT scan showed contusion and hematoma of the left frontal lobe. I spent 3 days in the hospital. Diagnosed with Post-Concussion Syndrome in September 2011. Currently have Medicaid, Medicare and SSI.

Current symptoms: Brain fog, mild memory issues, problems with spontaneity, occasional spacing out, word finding difficulties, tinnitus in right ear and some other things that I can't explain.

Life after the brain injury: 4 years after the injury, I'm engaged to my beautiful girlfriend of 5 years, I'm the CEO of my own business, Notorious Labs, I've taught myself how to program complex games and apps which is a feat I never thought I'd accomplish and now live a semi-normal life with very mild PCS symptoms.

Slowly but surely regaining my life back.

I'm at 10 months, seemingly almost recovered, there is 0 chance that I will ever play football in my lifetime. I know it's hard to stay away from your passions (I'm very young and an athlete) but if you really get hit and have an increase in symptoms I promise you that you will regret it. It is simply not worth the risk.

Try swimming, I have found it to be a great form of exercise.
