I've recently been reading that variants in the APOE gene may pre-dispose one to long term problems following a concussion. I have found websites that offer testing for this gene, such as "athleticode" (although its not cheap). I realize it won't likely change the way my post-concussion syndrome is managed today, but after 2.5 years of suffering from PCS I am just dying to know WHY it has taken so long after one concussion. Basically, I am pretty sure I want to go ahead with the testing (a simple cheek swab you mail in), but before I do just thought I would check if anyone has experience or knowledge of this. Thanks friends!

I will guarantee you that if you made it to be skilled enough to play varsity hockey, this was far from being your first concussion. It was likely you first concussion where your symptoms persisted and became problematic. Falls on the ice, body checks, and a variety of other traumas have all combined to leave you where you are today. You are not much different from a football player who has had years of sub-concussive impacts. They can actually be more damaging than a single severe hit. The player often disregards the dingers and keeps on playing when he should take time off the ice or football field. The research regarding sub-concussive impacts show them to be a silent killer.
I think the genetic testing will just cause anxiety. You are how you are. Better to spend your efforts reinventing your life with the skills and functions you have. My best to you.
