Default unable to read and write

Hi All,

6 weeks after a concussion and most of the severe headaches are gone. however, I'm not able to read or write for more than 20-30 minutes at a time. Anything longer than that brings on headache dizziness, and overall sickening sensations which last all day.

Has anyone else experienced an inability to read or write after a head injury?

Default welcome

Hello Golden,

Welcome to NeuroTalk. This is a good place with lots of experienced people. I am sorry to hear of your concussion.

6 weeks in is pretty early stages of recovery. I do recall not being able or wanting to read early on. I remember knitting made me very tired too. Those tired symptoms are telling you something. Don't push yourself to do that activity at this time.

It will pass, and no one can say how long it might take. But let yourself continue to rest and heal. Brain healing takes time and more time.

Let us know what else we can help you with.

All for now

[SIZE="1"]What happened. I was in a car accident 2-23-2013, and got a mild concussion from it. I had some time off for brain rest, got somewhat better, but slipped into PCS in March 2013.

Symptoms I had: dizziness, light and sound sensitivity, fatigue, tinitis, occasional headaches and migraines,

Symptoms as of 5--2013: poor sleep, tinitis, some confusion /short term memory blanks, balance. The other symptoms are mostly gone, but flare up if I OVERdo something.

Therapy I had: vestibular

3 months in: I could drive more and for longer distances. I felt like a younger, happier version of myself and I feel so blessed to have this feeling.

9 months in and I am working full time. I do get tired, and some sound and light sensitivity from time to time, but mostly I am over most of my symptoms.
I pray every day and I m praying for your recovery.

Over a year in: I can multi task (limited) and have humor in my life. But when I am tired, I am very tired.

Yes, I am going on 3 1/2 years and still have problems following a sentence when reading. And, even if I somehow get through the reading my comprehension is so poor that I can't remember what I read. Even if it's just a paragraph.

Default Reading is difficult

I am at almost 2 years and still can not read for longer than 30 minutes. Mine is due mostly to post traumatic vision syndrome and mid line shift syndrome.

I am currently undergoing treatment from a osteopath who is correcting the placement of my occipital bone. It is not his area of expertise, but he was told that until the occipital bone is in the correct position my vision therapy will not work.

I still have more session at the osteopath so I will see if this does anything. He also suggested going on a wheat free and dairy free diet. I am also on day 7 of this. Apparently wheat and dairy causes inflammation and getting rid of the inflammation and will help with brain repair (not exactly sure what he said??)

There are also computer screens which are easier to read from and tinted glasses which can help. I find it really difficult to look at facebook because the scanning can make me really sick within 20 minutes.

Good Luck and Happy New Years!!!!

I am approx 11 month out of brain surgery (cerebellar tumor) and I continue to to have eye tracking issues. I've noticed improvement in this regard. However, when it comes to reading text, my eye still fatigue after a few hundred words.

Give it time.

You may also want to visit a neuro-opthamologist or an optometrist who offers vision therapy to see if there is some kind of therapy that you need to help your tracking issues. You may also have other issues that you aren't even aware of or can't analyze for yourself.

There are other threads here with regards to that - Eowyn posted about it in one of the stickies at the top about it. I went to vision therapy for months and I think it helped me a great deal.
