Default How do I explain this weird brain feeling that I have?

Hello All
I feel like I haven't done a very good job of explaining some of the symptoms I am feeling to my doctors / therapists. One of the main ones is this feeling in my brain and head.

It includes dizziness, but it is not spinning. It is more of a dizzy, off-balance, wonky, feeling; but it is also a sensation in my head that feels like my brain is floating in liquid (which I guess technically it is, but we don't usually feel that sensation) - and it feels like my brain is swimming around inside my head, and every movement I make with my head makes my brain move around and it makes me feel dizzy. And my brain feels very sensitive to a jump, trying to jog, or trying to walk too fast. And it feels like my neck is struggling to keep my brain in place or something like that.

Does any of this make sense to anyone? Who else experiences this "weird brain feeling" as I call it? How can I explain this to my therapists in a way that will make them understand what I am talking about? Please help with this if you can.

Thank you and take care!

Many of us experience this feeling. But, since there is no medical term for it, it will not get the doctor's attention. Besides, there is nothing the doctor can do about it. It's just one of the many broad symptoms of PCS.

RidingRollerCoaster,

It does make sense. It sounds similar to some of the dizziness I experience too. I think that is a pretty good description. As far as the doctors, I don't know... I think they just don't always know.

About me: Married 45yo mother of two girls. In July 2014, I hit my head on the side of the pool; since then I've had 3 lesser concussions, one of which was due to MVA.

For the 5-10 years prior to that I’ve had what I now realize were possibly 20+ undiagnosed concussions or sub-concussions. Likely most of these result from Duane's Syndrome, for which I now have prism glasses. Have successfully done vestibular therapy and plan to start vision therapy.

Current companions: Significant depression, anxiety, hyperacusis, difficulty with verbal expression (recall & word mixups), mild spacial/vestibular issues. Feelings of disconnect in relationships.

I get a strange feeling as well especially when my vertigo is really bad. I describe it as a "full" or "swollen" feeling. Very difficult to describe.

Same, get weird bouts of dizziness and a feeling like I'm off center brain feels full. Balance is a weird issue worse with lots of visual stimuli. Not at all an expert but some of this can be made better by habituating yourself to it. That is keep symptom levels low , and when comfortable to do so provoke the feeling and wait to return to baseline over time may reduce sensitivities might be worth trying if you're comfortable with that.

I have this as well, and always struggled to explain my symptoms to doctors. It's very easy to explain a "headache" since everyone have had it and understand it perfectly.
But trying to explain these PCS-specific symptoms and all I get is blank stares or that it's just my anxiety.

The only person that was able to understand me is a buddy of mine who was in the Army and blew up on an IED in Afghanistan. He went through PCS for about 3 years along with other actual physical injuries that he will have to deal with for the rest of his life, so compared to him I have it easy.

March 2013 - Thought that since most of my symptoms resolved I could start having fun again.
Went snowmobiling once (didn't hit my head) and concussion symptoms returned and got even worse than before.
June 2013 - accidentally bumped my head against a deck railing, and had a month-long setback.
November 2013 - drove to work after a big snowstorm and the roads were very rough, ended up having another setback.
2014 - Having setbacks after coughing/sneezing too much, or someone slapping me on the back, or any other significant jarring.
Feb 2014 - Started seeing Atlas Orthogonal chiro - most helpful doc so far.
June 2014 - Two months of physical/visual therapy - no noticeable improvement.
September 2014 - Diagnosed with Perilymph Fistula in right ear.
November 2014 - Fistula surgery (switched to left ear before the surgery after additional testing).
January 2016 - Quit work to "work" on figuring out PCS, so far it seems that eyes/vision issues are the most contributing factor, especially computer work.

Current symptoms are: inconsistent sleep patterns, headaches, vertigo/dizziness, anxiety/panic attacks, mental fog/problems with concentration, problems with computer screens.

Default Thanks for your replies

Thank you everyone for your replies. It has gotten much better since my accident, but it is still always there and gets worse with more activity. It is comforting to know at least that you all know what I am talking about. Because as you said, I just get blank stares a lot of times when trying to describe it.

I'm curious, has anyone had this dizzy / swollen brain feeling go away completely?

Thank you

I was this sensitive early on as well but it got much better. It may take a lot longer than you want it to, but it will get better if you rest enough and try not to make it flare up.

Take care.
