over the last 20 years or so i have suffered several concussions, more than ten. some minor, others worse up to not remembering the last three days or not being able to talk normal. doing ok now, but over the last 6 month i have started having muscle spasms. started out in both legs but now has moved into my right hand and right cheek. also losing balance. not falling over, but do have to either put my hand on the wall or do a little "dance" to right myself.
never have i been to a neurologist, always have gone either the emergency room or a family physician. now i am noticing more little things, like i forget stuff, walk slower than i used to. know it is normal for things to happen as the age progresses, but wondering if it is normal for me at 42. guess the question is should i go see a specialist, and if so any particular kind? anything that i should be prepared for, questions to ask or be expected to answer? i have always been stubborn about going to the doc. thought i would ask, i read alot of good stuff on here. thanks, ron |

You could try to see a neuro but you may need to see a family medicine doctor first. Any Family Med doctor could start by doing a basic neuro exam. But, if you can go directly to a neuro, no reason to see a family doc.

Best to you.

What Happened: On November 29, 2010, I was walking across the street and was hit by a light rail commuter train. Result was a severe traumatic brain injury and multiple fractures (skull, pelvis, ribs). Total hospital stay was two months, one in ICU followed by an additional month in neuro-rehab. Upon hospital discharge, neurological testing revealed deficits in short term memory, executive functioning, and spatial recognition. Today: Neuropsychological examination five months post-accident indicated a return to normal cognitive functioning, and I returned to work approximately 6 months after the accident. I am grateful to be alive and am looking forward to enjoying the rest of my life. |

going june first. guess it has been going on for longer than i thought, i found this forum when i started to think that maybe some of my symptoms may not be normal. for the most part everything has been manageable, but this week things have been worse. i have noticed my jaw and cheek spasm, quiver, shake. i have also had several times where my whole head starts shaking. also forgot things that i just did, did not remember doing them at all.
