Hello, everyone!
My mother went through MVD, three and a half months ago, but she still suffering a lot. She has numbness and pain in her jaw and left cheek. She has also pain, but not constant. Sometimes she feel fine, but only for few hours. She don't take any medicine because she's allergic. I thought that she may have Anaesthesia Dolorosa, but she said she's not always numb and the pain is dull and not constant. Is that mean that MVD didn't work? I'm very worried about her and feel very panicky. Please help! Best of wishes to all of you! |

Hello Megun, pleased to meet you although I'm sorry you've had to post here on behalf of your mother. I've had an MVD many years ago & I've also had a recent surgery which was followed by AD. At first I was not sure if it was AD as my surgeon said it was dysesthesia, however it was very uncomfortable and at times mildly painful. I used Zostrix pepper cream on the cheek area, but had to be very careful not to get it near to my eyes or mouth. It did burn a little, but when I used it 4 times daily (as recommended) the more I used it the better it got. This along with time. After 12 weeks I still have numbness but not as bad as prior, but when I was told that it would get better it didn't help at the time! Did they find a compression during the MVD and if so I assume they successfully separated it? It doesn't mean that the MVD didn't work at all, everyone is different and things can take time to settle down. Please say Hi for me, I can try to help as best that I can (if I can!)

Hi, Bayley and thanks for reply!
Please let me know know more about AD, what do you fell, do you have constant numbness...How long ago was your MVD? Did surgeons find compression during the MVD? And did the nerve was damaged by that surgery? What's the type of your TN? Have you been diagnosed with AD? Sorry for asking so much, but I'm really worried about my mom. My mother has type 2, and surgeons found an artery and a vein compressing the nerve. They said that the surgery was successful, but my mother's not so sure... She 's so desperate now, she sorry for her decision to have a brain surgery. She said to me that numbness's geting worse when weather is windy, cloudy and rainy. Sometime she don't have numbness at all but that's only for very short period. Glad to hear from you, warm wishes! |

Hi, don't feel bad about the questions, I'm very happy to try to help, I hate the thought of this continual suffering, I'll try to describe the best that I can....my mvd was over 10 years ago now, there was a compression which was separated with teflon, but I'm a bit of an oddity as I have an artery that perforates the nerve
![]() The surgery that I had earlier in the year (March) was cryosurgery, which froze my nerve to a temperature of minus 80 degrees. How I describe my AD that followed is like a painful numbness (its numb and yet its also painful) and tingly, a bit like when those fairy lights constantly flash on off on off and my cheek often felt glowing or on fire. For a short while it felt either inflamed or raw like and a little bit swollen. When this settled a bit I used the Zostrix. After around 7/8 weeks it started to subside a little but it did get me down. The diagnosis was both dysesthesia and AD, I did take amitriptylene for a while, then I had problems from that with a horrible condition called 'dry mouth'. I mainly have classic TN but I also have atypical periodically. Going back to the mvd, the day after my op I had a horrendous attack and had to continue on high dose Tegretol for a few months after until trying to decrease. I never regained my hearing either and it took me some time to deal with it and not be angry. Without any meds I can understand the pain your mother must be in. I am not in a position to tell you what to do of course, but I'm quite sure that if it was me I'd be pushing to see the neurologist again, quickly, as the situation sounds bad. Start to write things down in a pain diary, even on the ok days. Let me know how its going, or if there's anything else that you want to ask please do so ![]() |
