Default Vitamin D and b12 low

I just had my yearly physical and blood work done. Unfortunately my results came back low on my B12- 314. My Vitamin D- 14.

The past year was a difficult year for me. I got ver neglectful of taking my vitamins. I also wasn't eating properly. Now I need to rebuild myself up. I got a bottle of vitamin D 1000iu... A bottle of calcium 600+D.... A bottle of B12 1,000mcg... Will I be on the right track with these doses??

Thanks Pauline

Hello, Pauline. Welcome to NeuroTalk.

The general rule of thumb with vitamin D is 1000IU of D3 /10ng/ml on the test. To get you in range, at the lowest number 50... you'll need 4000IU a day. You can then get retested in 6 mos or so and see if you have come up properly.

What did you doctor say to do?

The B12 should be taken on an empty stomach. (I hope it is NOT extended release kind). You could start at 2 of them and do that for a month or 2 and then go back to 1 a day. Take on an empty stomach for best absorption.

Thanks for your response mrsD.
My Doctor told me to make sure I was taking the vitamins she had told me to take a year ago the B12 the calcium 650mg and the Vitamin D.....But like I mentioned it was a rough year for me taking care of a very ill mom who recently passed away so during that time I completely forgot about myself..
Now, I am on the path to making sure I am healthy. I have been experiencing aches and pains in my whole body but just blamed it all on that I was going through. Most likely it has to do with the Vit D being so low.

I just checked my B12 bottle it says timed relesae on it. That is not good?
Should I get a new bottle of not timed released??

Wink

Non timed release is better. You need all the B12 to be available in the certain part of the intestine where it gets absorbed.

I don't know why they make that timed release form... at all!

It is not expensive online. Check out Puritan's Pride (who just started carrying it) or iherb.com
Vitacost also has it.

Get the methylcobalamin one while you are at it, replacing the other. You can still take the other to use it up (or take it back to the store if you didn't open it yet). Methyl form is better than cyano. It is so inexpensive now, it is best to use the better form. Take it on an empty stomach.
