Default Vitamin levels

Hello everyone! I recently had my vitamin levels checked and I wanted to share that information with you so you can help me to find out if these levels are ok.

These are the results of the studies:

Vitamin D 45 ng/mL
Folic acid 15 ng/mL
Calcium 10.4 mg/dL
Vitamin b12 996 pg/mL
Magnesium 1.90 mg/dL

Are these levels fine? And if they are ok, do you think i should still take supplements?

I was thinking about taking vitamin d, cause i have seen several articles that describe how it can help with neuropathic pain, but I don't know if, given my levels, it would be a bad idea.

I also had my fasting insulin and fasting glucose analyzed and these were the results.

Fasting glucose 87md/dL
Fasting insuline 10.49 uU/mL

Could these levels indicate pre diabetes??

Thank you for your input guys.

Question

Hi Monica....

Your fasting glucose and insulin look okay for now.

Re: the Vit D... Which one was tested?

When you have blood work done, it is always best to post your
reference ranges used by that lab. They can vary quite a bit, and also can be different in different countries.
Also was the magnesium a cellular reading or serum?

What did your doctor say about your results?

Still using the d-chiro inositol?

I am not sure but I know I take calcium with vitamin d twice a day for bone health. I think you are a young female too and as someone who has osteoporsis at a young age I think it is important but just my thoughts

Thank you Mrs D and Daniella.

I don't have my reference ranges here with me right now, but when I get them, I will post them.

All my vits and minerals measured are within the ranges from the lab, though.

I had the Vit D 25 hydroxy measured. The one that should be measured right?

The doctor said: see?? They're fine!. He keeps believing that neuropathies caused by nutritional issues are only possible in cases where people are starving and in extreme poverty. I don't share his view of course.

Yes Mrs D, I am still using d chiro inositol. I wonder what my insuline level was before taking it, but I am doing very fine with it, I won't stop taking it!

He definitely is wrong. I was not starving, I have never been starving, yet I have neuropathy caused by malabsorption because of gluten intolerance. He needs to do some more studying. I have been gluten free for almost 9 yrs and I am still struggling to get my vitamin levels up.

Vitamin D---26 range 20-100, although the Vit D council says 50 is optimum (Vit D,25-OH,LC,MS,MS test)

iron--61 range 40-160
ferritin--22 range being 10-232 (optimum being at least 100)
B12--1013 range 200-1100, which we all know 200 is too low, and my level is down from 1237, even though I was taking 3000mcg then, now 5000

Most of my vitamin levels are within the "normal" range, yet all very low within that range. I have a real problem with ranges, what's normal for one, may not be normal for another.

My doctors tell me I am so healthy, I will live another 50 yrs. Yet, if I am so healthy, why do I have all these health issues? I was diagnosed with CFS in Februry. As of late, I am thinking my iron has dropped, I am so cold all the time, and I have never had a problem with being cold, quite the opposite. I have lost 28#, but can still lose a lot more, so I really do not think it's the weight loss causing the cold.

I guess if we do not take care of ourselves, no one will.

The problem with lab ranges is that they are just arbitrary.

They are numerical ranges taken from "normal" people and averaged. If the pool used to take the range figures has low people in it....well, you get the idea. I think this is how the B12 range got so low to begin with.

The controls are chosen, who "appear" to be healthy. So if our knowledge base is lacking for that item being tested, then the range may show a low figure for normal which is NOT normal.

The Vit D information is sooooo new... I still am a bit skeptical of the high doses some people are using.
A friend of mine is taking 10,000 IUs a day. I cannot bring myself to do that or recommend it. This winter I used 4000 IUs and now am just starting back off that since I am outside more.

I would like some time to pass on the Vit D really high doses. I would like to see no negative trade offs with it.

My tummy is so contrary, I started out with just 2000IU's of Vit D. I am going to ask to have it retested, just to see if it's improving at all. 26 is too low though, don't you think?

I feel the same way about normal ranges. They need to take in consideration, those of us who are not so healthy. Even when I am feeling fairly good, I still have all these other issues, so I can't understand how a doctor can actually say, "You are so healthy, you will live another 50 yrs." Another 50 yrs is great, but please, can I actually be healthy for those 50 yrs?
