Default Neurontin and St. John's Wort: Is this a safe combo?

HI,
I take Neurontin for RSD in my limbs. I was offered Cymbalta but it didn't agree with me..
I would like to try St. John's Wort to optimize my seratonin level (which is what Cymbalta is supposed to do) but I've been unable to find reliable info that it is safe to take S. John's Wort with Neurontin!
Has anyone ever tried this combination and in what dosage?

Thanks!!

did u get headaches, or nervousness with cymbalta? i was thinking of taking cymbalta because of the fibromyalgia. but i didnt do well on wellbutrin so ithink cymbalta would be worse. i would rather go with an SSRI or 5htp, before i even tried st john's wort. st john's wort is a terrible herbal remedy, with many drug-herb interactions.

Hi,
thanks for the reply! Did you have a bad experience with St. John's Wort? Can you tell me the source where it says it is a horrible herbal remedy? i would be so curious to get some additional info!! Was it a web site or advice from an M.D. or?? The cymbalta made me feel hyper and hypo at the same time!!
Hope you're having a good week-end!

hyper and hypo?? hypertensive, and hypotensive?

no i just read from overall experience with herbal remedies and the fact that no one takes st john's wort period, and the ones that do, have bad side effects from it. its much safer and is a better more popular choice overall to go with 5HTP, b vitamins, fish oil, and maybe some L-tyrosine for depression. and forgo the st johns wort 5htp is a great supplement

Hi...I am still on vacation but I have a few minutes here at the laundromat to get online.

Neurontin is not metablized in the body so it does not interfere with the metabolism of other drugs by the liver.

St. John's wort does interfere with many drugs. But I would not expect it to with Neurontin or Lyrica.

There is a drug checker website in the stickies at the Medication forum, and you can use it to get official details.

St. John's wort also may cause photosensitivity reactions when you go into sunlight or use a tanning booth.

As mrsD is unavailable at the moment, I hope it's OK that I answer in her place bruegger84.

Hyper means big, over or high. So... hypertension means high blood pressure.
Hypo means small, under or low. So.... hypotension means low blood pressure.

I hope that helps.

Hi. My psych was taling about this supplement because I asked her about melatonin and my current meds. She said that for me I should not take this but I think it was cause of serequel. I am on neurontin though as well so not sure. There are other reg meds that possibly you could take. Have you talked to your doc about that? Also when you say Cymbalta did not agree when I first started to take it I was ill for like 2 weeks but my doc told me to just stick it out and the symptoms went away. Of course there are more serious side issues so I am not sure what yours were and then I can see not wanting to take.
