Default Eating late in the evening...

I started snacking late in the evening last year as an escape from my mominlaw with AD. It seemed like such an innocent and comforting thing to do at 10 or 11 at night in bed... 10 lb later I can't stop this awful habit!

It's like an addiction that I want to kick, and I don't have any other vices...

Any advice? Other than eating fruit, veggies etc, cause I do this, but I nned to quit altogether.

Red face

there is nothing wrong with having a small snack before bed, to carry you thru the night. I mean we have dinner at 5-6 and then stay up till midnight that is a long time to go with out eating. It is just you have to decide what foods you are going to eat.
sometimes I pop a bag of lite pop corn and munch on that, glass of fat free milk or a piece of toast, a slice of cheese, usually around 100 calories...tides me over.
There is not a quick fix for the 10 pounds, I lost 10 pounds counting calories....If you are only 10 pounds over your goal wieght this is the hardest time to lose...those last 10
1200 calories I lost 10 pounds pretty quickly but that is very restrictive and could only do that for so long.
It took great disciplin....I also started going to the gym and walking on a tred mill. I don't drink any calories except for the milk. have you ever dieted before?HOw is your activity level?
age bracket?
there is a good web site that I use to get me on track.
www.sparkpeople.com
register and it helps you keep tract of your foods that you eat makes it very easy to see where you have been and where you are going.
good luck and let us know how it is going.

I try to have dinner before 7:30 or if later than that it's a small light dinner.
Otherwise I will get heartburn during the night.

What time is your usual dinner and what time do you go to bed?
And what are you snacking on now?

change the habit??
read a good book?
do some relaxing stretches or yoga?

Bozo, thank you for your thoughtful reply, and you too jomar.
I have felt really bad, about developing this habit, like it is a dirty habit as I know my husband frowns upon it. The food I have been eating isn't that unhealthy for the most part. However, I am going to sleep right after as I do this in bed and just before I am ready to close my eyes. So, my teeth are not getting brushed as a second but even bigger problem.

So, after reading your response and doing more research I explained to my husband that night time snacks are not all that bad, and in fact are quit normal if they are light and one brushes their teeth after.

However, given I seem to want to eat in bed, having had fallen asleep with food in my mouth! A few times, and not brushing my teeth because I am half asleep already, I told him I don want to tsp, but need loving support to do so. I asked him to talk with me about it at night time and to encourage me like a coach. He is not one to do this so I told him it was good learning for both of us. Last night I did not eat a late night snack! And did not eat my dinner in bed... The eating dinner laying down is something I have made into a habit because I have had to do this from time to time with my MS.

New rules, eat dinner in the family room unless MS flare, no food in bed at night and no midnight snack. Let's see how this goes.

I am 142lbs, s/b 128 at 5'6, very small frame. So I need to really lose more than ten pounds, but ten would sure make me happy. My activity level is minimal. Pilates once, maybe twice a week and walking if energy levels allow. I just started a new med that is supposed to help with energy and that will get me walking much more. Eight years ago, before MS hit, i was a runner, slim, healthy etc... I am trying so hard to be healthy again. Does this answer you questions? I do have a nutritional diary counter on my iPad that I just started using last week. My daily rid is 1350, so far I am over by about 200 each day...
Thank you so much for your comments about the night eating, and diet questions, sometimes all it takes is knowing it's not all that bad. I just now have to beat it!
Cheers!
Sandra

Thumbs up

I am glad that you got your hubby on board!
He needs to be encouraging you in all of this.
I never eat in bed so that is not a problem for me.
WE almost always eat dinner at the dining room table.
Since you are not that far from your goal weight, you will need patience in yourself.
1200 calories a day took weight off for me... but I have a pretty high metabolic rate..
glad that you have something to help you track your food intake.
good luck and we are here to cheer you on!

Bizi, I am so sorry in my reply I called you Bozo! That is this darn Ipad's auto correct and I didn't see it until now...

Jo*mar, reading will help a lot as I can't eat and read in bed at the same time because I don't sit up, good idea!

Thank you both,

you've gotten some great advice.
i would make it a rule that you cannot eat in bed. it's also a safety issue as you could choke on the food. make the rule that you can only eat at the table. it might help.

you might also try to drink something. sometimes we're just only thirsty instead of hungry and get the cues wrong.

try to eat something that's protein. it will stay with you longer and should help you hunger more.

boy, good luck. i know how hard this is. keep us posted.

One week no late night food in bed or otherwise...

Still having dinner too late at night a number of nights but that may not change.

Thank you all for you support!
