i keep eating

i was doing pretty well until the trip. then had pizza when we went out. dad and i split a bottle of wine (both had a lot more than usual). since coming home i have been at the bread - normally eat very little bread. granted we went through a couple of five-grain loaves that i LOVE (usually we have whole wheat) also my mom brought home some nut rolls and some herb rolls which she didn't care for so i had my share of one and most of the other.

but today the yummy stuff is gone and it's like... go to fridge. open. stare in there. hmmm what can i eat... hmmm... what's yummy...

so far: 1 yogurt, 1 chicken leg, 1 anchovy sandwich. and it's only noon now.

yesterday i had three anchovy sandwiches interspersed through the day. thank goodness that bread is finished - and now, so are the anchovies! :o

Mari 05-15-2010 06:19 AM

Waves,
Oh, I was reminded of anchovies the other day.
Your post made me think of them again. My mom used to
put them on pizza she made. I'm not eating pizza so I will have to think of something else.
Maybe i can eat them in a salad.

M.

waves 05-15-2010 08:28 AM

from anchovies to olives

Ahh... someone else who likes anchovies! :D Mari, they are good in salads btw. especially with fresh or sundried tomatoes too. the potassium in the tomatoes will also offset the sodium content of the anchovies.

well... going along my day...

3pm. tack on a handful of strawberries and two slices of wheat bread slathered generously with... green olive paste!

we don't usually have olive paste but i guess it was on special or something - mom got a jar of black olive paste too! however, this one was already open, and in the fridge - mom says it will go rancid if not eaten fast... so i am just being helpful, see? yeah, that's the only reason i'm eating it. sure. uhuh. and if you buy that, i got some land in Florida i could sell you too...

I made it to the gym 3 x this week!

that is very good Beth

you are doing so well.
i am very proud of you! :)

ehhh... could you maybe do some treadmill to burn off some of the calories *I'M* eating, too? :D:p hehe

man i have just been waaaay overboard since coming back. never re-settled. finally got up the guts to get on the scale - up two pounds! now part of that is likely transient (or clothing) - but probably 1 lb is real. :(

~ waves ~

bizi 05-15-2010 06:33 PM

WEll I did over eat today....
over the course of 5 hours:
4 oz of chicken with proscutto and wine reduction
one cup of tabulli with feta cheese
1/2 cup hummus with pita bread
one wedge of vegetable focacia bread
2 carrot muffins
cranberry almond cream cheese roly poly thinly sliced wrap(3 small pieces)
2 strawberries
It was all very very good.
now I am going to have a couple of beers and watch reruns of lost!

I have to get a life for finding new foods.

It all sounds good. But I dont seem to find any that sounds good.

hi folks

Dear Beth,

that menu made my mouth water!

Dear Donna,

changing food choices is hard. some things are acquired tastes, and some people have a narrower range of foods they like than others.

one thing you might try is perhaps making modifications to foods you already like. for instance, one modification we have made is on mashed potatoes - instant or real. we used to use a lot of milk and some butter. now we use very little milk, and little or no butter. also for things like this you could use skim milk.

speaking of which, at one point in my life i drank skim milk. (not now because - don't laugh - we can't get it here, not fresh anyway.) even though i was already used to 2%, switching to skim i thought it tasted like water. however after a couple of weeks i got used to it and then it tasted quite ordinary to me. i would get 2% or whole as a treat sometime - and they tasted like cream!:D

i don't know if this is helpful. maybe you already do this stuff.

~ waves ~

Dmom3005 05-16-2010 03:07 PM

Thanks for the ideas.

Yes I did change the kinds of milks. I haven't been able to change to skim
milk. Never could get used to the taste. I just wouldn't drink it if I bought
it. So its been 2 % that we have for me.

I also do what I can to do other things.

I love mashed potatoes and I have a variety of things I add to them on
any given night. I never know which item I ame, going to like in any
given night. So it makes it hard.

Some time I rotate foods around. And right now I have fought to figure
out if anything sounds good. Its just like nothing ever o sounds good.

bizi 05-16-2010 04:19 PM

I discovered how simple and good a baked sweet potato tastes!
Simple and easy to cook in the microwave. very nutritous and better carb choice than a reg potato.
I put 2 ...5 inch long sweet potatos into the micro wave for 5 minutes done perfect!!!! (no wraping or poking needed)
how simple and tastey!!!!!!
I ate mine plane Jeff did put alittle spread on his.

Dmom3005 05-16-2010 04:26 PM

Thanks for the good sounding idea.

I'm going to call my husband who isn't home and ask if he will
bring some.

Donna

bizi 05-16-2010 04:45 PM

honestly donna, try fat free organic milk...it is delicioius! honestly!
horizen makes the best but the other is just as good.
I could not believe how good it tasted.
only 90 calories a cup. perfect thing right before bed.

Not sure if I'm losing anymore. But I'm just happy to say my clothes

are going other than I need to eat more to stay healthy.

but I'm doing pretty well.

I have a lot of extra pounds that look awful! even if I got to my idea weight I would still not be happy with the way I look because I am a pear shape....I can't change that.

Dear Bobby

Good to see you here. Good job and i hope this Ornish diet works well for you!

whatever i might have (?) gained after i came back from the funeral seems to have disappeared again, and took another couple pounds with it.

~ waves ~

waves 05-22-2010 05:19 AM

Dear Bizi

maybe you could start thinking about the style of clothes that you wear, things like blouse length and whether it is tucked in or not can make a lot of difference in look; we can pick clothing that complements our natural shape. bone structure is not something that can be changed. but, for instance, just wearing dark bottoms and light tops (not viceversa) helps balance things, visually, if you have broad hips.

~ waves ~

waves 05-22-2010 05:21 AM

Dear Donna

i am glad your clothes are fitting better - what a satisfying feeling. Good job.

thank you...i need all the encourage i can get ..i got on the scale today and lost eight pounds. I had two servings of the dreamfields pasta yesterday which fills me up. I have alot of romaine lettuce in the refrigerator. I have low fatdressing. I have broccoli and butter buds. The amount of weight i have to loose is huge and when i think of it i think i can't do it. I wonder if this rapid weight lose is a lot of water weight. Ornish says try to lose two pounds a week. I seem to be losing a pound a day.

Bobby

i doubt that 8lbs is just water weight. with a lot of weight to lose, it may be normal to lose more at first. maybe ask your doctor for some feedback/guidance to make sure you are staying safe. also check your blood sugar to make sure you stay within range not too high OR TOO LOW. change in diet can affect that.

Don't think of the weight all at once. Think of it in bits and pieces (10% off, 10 pounds off, whatever helps.). And don't think of your final goal all the time. Remember that this is a process. You have started eating in new ways that you can do for a long time.

The amount of weight lost a week has to do with how much weight a person has in the beginning. I think a person might be able to keep up a rate of more than two pounds a week for several weeks or a month and then settle down to 1 to 2 pounds a week.
(I mean I'm giving an example here -- just as Ornish was -- this depends on a person's starting weight.)

You are doing fine.

thanks...i don't have anything to check my blood sugar even though i am diabetic..my doctor checks it every three months...i think she has checks my acac or something and it has steadily risen to eight. She was the one who told me that this was the best diet.
l see her in two weeks and will discuss it with her. maybe i just cursed myself and the weight will stop falling off me. my old friend Bob told me he was worried about me last weekend and told me to try to get down to 260 by the end of May. I didn't think I could do it especially since I have been in a weight gaining mode

thank you Mari
as I wrote Waves, I hope i haven't jinxed myself....why does everything have to be one day at a time. Icouldn't do this diet if i couldn't have pasta....that is a real comfort food. you can also have french baguettes because they have no fat. i bought butter buds which i like if i want to put them on the vegetables. he says no coffee and decaf is less bad. I switched to decaf and didn't get a headache or anything. I forgot what he wrote about caffeine constricting the blood vessels. his book was really funny. he mentioned smoking and the Marboro man. he wrote that half the men who smoke are impotent because of the constriction of the blood vessels so it would probaby scare more men off of smoking instead saying about death mentioning impotency. lol
bobby

Mari 05-22-2010 09:18 AM

Dear Bobby,

Dieting to loose weight is harder than stopping smoking or drinking in my book because with those two, a person can just stop whereas with food we have to modulate it.

The thing about Ornish, Bobby, is that this is not a race. I'm sure he thinks people should be on his diet even if they do not have to loose weight. Weigh yourself if it helps and make realistic mini goals if it keeps you focused. Remind yourself that with each meal you plan and eat for yourself you are healing your body and your mind.

isn't it great to see the scales go down!

I agree with what has been said, sound advice.:grouphug:

I am a bit concerned that your a1c is 8, they should have gotten you a glucometer to use at home, you need to eat proteins thru out the day to help keep your blood sugars stable.
you are doing a good job, small steps...

that was so kind of you. I used to cook a lot when i was young and thin and now that I am sixty six and fat I hardly cook. I don't have much patience and when i see a lot of ingredients i run. I also think a lot of single people don't bother as much.
I just ordered a lot of black beans thingies. I also ordered pretzels which are okay on the diet and fat free cool whip .

Okay I probably missed it. But if you don't mind are you on
insulin or a diabetic medicine. Reason I ask is when I went on Medformin
it was on of the things that helped me the most lose the 40lbs I've lost.

I too needed to lose weight bad. And diets just weren't helping. I went
to some diabetic classes and they set up my diet. But after the first class
when I went back. I had lost more weight than I should have the nurse
wanted to know how I had done that.

I told her I wasn't sure. I had just watched my diet and done what I was
told. She said, Darn I was hoping it was my diet plan. And that you hadn't
cut out foods.

the reason why it is so important tha you keep your blood sugars even is that you can be affecting all of your cells. without even knowing it.
your kidneys your heart.... that is why keeping you blood sugars lower is so important.
please check your blood sugars and watch them.... it is important....

Dear Bobby,
These are good foods.
I don't cook either. I throw bagged lettuce in a bowl or make a pot of lentil soup. Keep going. You are doing great.

I am using Metformin and Glimerpride(sp). It didn't help me lose weight. I have cut down on eating since I started this diet. I spoke to a nutritionist but i don't know how much information she gave me and i did buy some books and read stuff on the net
