sigh

monday is my weigh-in day. sigh.

i think i may have lost all of ......

............. a HALF a pound!

whoa. at this rate, if i'm not careful i'll blow away in the wind. :o
(if only. :o)

i did walk to the store today, and back with a bag of groceries. 15 mins each way, moderate-fast pace.

i've been eating pretty decently, and moderate quantities. i think only exercise will make a difference for me... because for so long, i have had so incredibly little movement. and i'm SOOOO unfit. it's awful. it's embarrassing! :o:eek:

That is a good walk.

You can move from not moving much to moving more (defining "more" to be whatever you need).

Waves

I had to stop weighing myself every week because it was so depressing.

So I just started weighing in when it felt like I should. So at times I
would.

I was at the doctor yesterday and I weighed a little more than before.

bizi 04-13-2010 01:38 PM

waves! congratulations on your walking more!!!!
I didnot realize that you were dieting too. welcome to the club...
I have found the only way for me to lose is by calorie counting.
measureing out my food and weighing pieces of meat to control portion sizes 3-4 oz of meat is not much but if you flatten chicken out with a mallot it looks bigger!:D
It is hard not having access to my calorie counter tool. but am able to estimate pretty good.
Have been exercising 3xweek now for 3 weeks. My scrubs feel better! and I don't look as pregnant as I used to!
good luck everyone,
here is to healthy eating habits!
bizi
I think I told you that I add a cup of v8 juice to 50 oz of water and drink on that thru out the day...jsut enough taste to not taste like plain water and enough salt to make it appealing, and 2 extra servings of veggies for the day!;)

I went out to eat for lunch today at a chinese restaurant. I asked for extra shrimp and lots of veggies and no fried rice and to steam the meal to not use any oil and they made it jsut great!!!!!! lots of brocolli, bak choy, celery, green beans, carrots, I am full! the sauce was a brown thin soy sauce, it did have a little oil but was very thin and wasn't alot.
I did not eat the little corn bits not the water chestnuts...don't know about their calorie counts.
yesterday I did not eat enough...I was ravinous at 10 pm so had a wrap with pepper jack cheese and salsa and a cup of fat free milk...I warmed up the wrap and it was so good!
I chose between beer and food,
food won!

hi

thanks for the encouragement. you guys are uplifting. :)

Mari - yes i have to do things gradually. that is hard for me. i start doing something, and realize how far away i am from where i need to/want to be. :( so it distresses me. but you are right, can't really go from 0 to 100 without the steps in between! :o

Donna - before i appointed a weigh-in day, i was weighing myself too often which isn't good. i could make it 2 weeks apart, but i like to keep tabs if i have a small gain, so i can offset it before it creeps up on me. :o

Beth - i am not actually on a diet, in the strict sense. i know the whole calorie counting thing works for some (certainly it is for you :)) but i personally would get too obsessed if i tried something like that. it would make me think about food more, whereas i need to think about it less - my downfall is comfort-eating.

i very very seldom diet... and i right now i am not even in a position to do so, because i would have to prepare all my food separately from the others, which would be too problematic in terms of kitchen use. however, i am wanting to lose weight and get more fit: hence walking, trying to be moderate with food and choose healthy foods.

:o So... am i disqualified from this thread? :o

i am glad that food won over beer when you got hungry last night! that is gooood. :) one thing i would like to say is to be cautious of excessive reduction of oils in the diet, especially if you are doing a high-protein diet. you do need some oils for proper nutrient absorption, and general "transit" - maybe you are getting enough i don't know. using a little olive oil, esp. raw, is also good at offsetting cholesterol you might be getting from other foods like red meat and cheese.

We're all here together recording, encouraging, . . .
And each seems to be on her own path.

I'm on the braces diet -- don't feel like hassling about food unless it is mushy.
Also I don't eat enough veggies unless I make an effort -- even before braces.
Also, I'm conflicted about eating meat // being vegetarian / vegan.
I wonder if being vegan is like being on any other journey -- we come to it at a certain time in our life, leave it, come back to it in a different place . . . .
. . . . late night thoughts. . . . .

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Here is an easy food that hubby and I have been making.

I buy two huge sweet potatoes.
Then he peels them, cuts them up in fourths or fifths, and puts them on high in the mini crock pot with a few tablespoons of water.
They are done about 4 -5 hours later.
We eat them plain.

He prefers the texture in the crock pot better over steamed on the stove or the microwave or baked in the oven. (And the oven is inefficient in that it heats up the whole kitchen.)

The sweet potatoes have lots of nutrition and require no clean up, as the mini crock pot is easy to clean.

that makes sense. i have had this conflict since i my teens, and it affects my diet in waves, also. i've never been strictly vegan, but close: lacto-ovo-vegetarian, light on the lacto-ovo component. i was sensitive to milk back then too.

... i was quite sensitive to milk all my life in US and caribbean, but not here! must be something in the cow-food.

i have been through periods where veggies were hard for me. then it was like, bean burritos from Taco Hell, lentils/beans and rice, yogurt with cereal... lol. do you like V8, Mari? bizi mentioned it... i used to do V8 myself when i had a hard time with veggies. also carrot juice or ACE if you like them (i don't so much).

my diet is grossly deficient in fruit. i try to compensate some with fruit juice, fwiw. :o

that sounds good. i like no-fuss food. :)

my current no-fuss foods are microwaved baked potato, and steamed basmati rice. i eat both plain. the basmati i make as a dinner side for mom and me, but i cook extra. it reheats very well in the microwave, retaining texture. the leftover makes for ready snacks or lunches - good with leftover veggies too.

Dear Waves,
In your other post you mentioned cheese too.
I think I love cheese -- although I don't have the choices available that you do. . . . also not knowledge able about it.
Except for his four week foray into South Beach Diet territory, hubby keeps cooked rice around. I often heat it up with shredded cheddar in the mircrowave -- sometimes add soy sauce. (He likes Basmati. Recently he found some Japanese rice in the back of the cupboard.

A rare fav of mine is GF bread toasted with mayo and mustard and Havartii cheese.

apples

Hi,

I found a way to get myself to eat more fruit.
A few times this week I asked hubby to cut, peel, and core an apple for me when he was already at the table. I buy lots of apples for him but I really don't like being bothered with them for myself.

Anyway, after he cuts up the apple I slice it more and then eat it with my fingers.
Sometimes, important victories seem small in the retelling.

Trust me, this is big.

Donna, that is why i am not really on any diet, because if i did i would be "off" often, and then i'd get down about it and spiral into comfort eating (WAAAY OFF) constantly. so yeah, just do the best you can. cut what corners you can. that's good that you are getting veggies on your sandwiches. some veggies is better than no veggies.

Beth, what can i say, you are a real diet trooper. it is hard to "observe" when you have company but don't worry i'm sure you'll get right back on it. a little break is ok. you have done so well. i'm very proud of you.

Mari, that IS a big achievement about the apple... i very seldom eat fruit. times when i do include when my parents feed me a slice of their (peeled) apple after dinner. IF i have an apple of my own accord, i will only eat it off the core, unpeeled, crunch munch. but we don't seem to get the juicy slightly-tart ones, plus mom harps how i shouldn't eat the skin with all the pesticides nowadays and she's probably right. i can't bring myself to sit down and set about with a knife and a plate for an apple, i'm sorry. so i totally respect your apple thing with hubby - i think that's way cool!

i think i might suggest we have pizza soon. we haven't had pizza in probably 6 months or more. dad doesn't care for it much. that or i'm going to break down and have a kebap sandwich one of these days.

This sounds about right.
Somedays we feel that we had foods that are better for us than food that we had other days. It's best to stay away from self-judgement.
There really is no morality to food choices -- they are not good or bad. They just are. Some choices are better than others. And all choices can be fit into any overall plan.

Also, one idea is to celebrate along the lines of what weight watchers calls NSV for (Non Scale Victory). I bought a pedometer and I consider that SOMETHING. When I get around to taking it out of its packaging and trying it I'll let you know what I think. ;)

Regarding food with chemicals: I have a friend who has a Talapia farm. His fish only eat food sold to him by the U S Dept of Agrigulture. He thinks that Talapia brought into this country is not safe. My sis cares about where her shrimp comes from . . . It gets to be too much. . .
I pay attention to food safety, but my shopping and eating habits are inconsistent. Lately I've been telling hubby to stop drinking cow milk. I find it disgusting and yet I eat cheese from cows. He told me to buy him goat milk and some how for the moment I find that less yucky than cow milk.
(I wonder if it is hard for him to be married to someone neurotic about everything. And yet he goes a long with me most of the time, thank Goodness.)

It gets to be too much.
I've seen lists of the top 10 fruits and veggies not to eat unless you are eating organic (strawberries are out according to this, . . . )
I've seen other scientists say that the possible negative effect of the chemicals is out weighed by the benefit of the nutrition and fiber of the fruit / veggie.

I would probably be best if we could eat without over thinking food.
HA. http://bestsmileys.com/lol/5.gif
That might happen someday.

I have to admit as long as I am not gaining weight. I hope to continue
to lose one day. But right now my old pattern of eating doesn't sound
good. So I have to watch myself to not overindulge in cakes and things
like that mainly. Only because I used to be able to eat the whole cake
if I bought it by myself.

Now I just make sure when I buy a cake or something like that its not,
me eating it all in one day. I try to take a whole week. Or Derrick
and my other son's are helping. Or the grandkids that like cake.

I really enjoy just a few fruits. And because I cut myself when I cut
things. I have to buy the precut kinds. Which used to drive my husband
crazy till he figured out that I was losing weight by eating those foods.

But I have to get just the right apples, some are bitter and I can't eat
them. I love strawberries, they are the one thing I can cut okay.
But watermelon has to be in slices at least. Usually I get it precut.
I don't like pineapple, but I'm working on trying to find a way to like
it. Its to bitter for me. But its close, so. I like cantaloupe to a degree.

So if you have any ideas how I can use the fruits to help let me know.

I'm not a veggie eater, except peas and corn. And I really have no wish
to try others. I eat potatoes which I believe some call this.

But I don't.

YES! :In-Lurve:
The pre cut foods are fabulous.
My tdoc talked about this --make it as easy as possible to get what we need for ourselves.

Quote:

Lots of folks are fussy about their apples. I used to buy Red Delicious for hubby but for a while they were not good. Now he tells me to buy Gala (sweet) or Rome (a little tart).
The Granny Smith have been my favorite for years and years.
Maybe you can try the Gala apples -- they are sweet.
You could try Fuji apples -- sweet and jucy.

I like a firm apple more than anything else. That is why I like Red Delicious or Granny Smith.
Is the texture important to you? I used to cut up one and eat it with cinnamon.

My mom used to bake an apple for herself. A baked apple is easy to do if you are already home and have time.
How about apple sauce?

Quote:

I love strawberries, they are the one thing I can cut okay.
Yes I agree about the strawberries. Also blueberries are easy to deal with. Do you eat grapes?
I started eating green grapes because the are less sweet than the purple grapes. How about the globe grapes? Do you eat those big grapes?
Do you like grapes?

Yes. Pre-cut watermelon or let hubby buy it and carry it home and such.

to try others. I eat potatoes which I believe some call this.
I guy frozen baby peas for myself and microwave them.
Also, green beans are ok. Do you like baby peas or green beans?
Potatoes have lots of nutrition.
