Hi curlydawg, i'm waves... welcome aboard!!!

i've read of two kinds of situations in regard to late diagnosis:
-- inadeguate evaluation
-- late life disease emergence.

these are quite distinct.

in one case, a person has symptoms, sometimes significant ones, often with development in the teens. sometimes (usually) after 20's and 30's they get better but they can worsen instead.

the other possibility is that symptoms do not emerge until much later in life... 50's and 60's. there are cases of that. i figure some of those cases probably had "unobserved" sx before that too... but perhaps not all .... (how do we really know?!)

((( hugs )))

Hi, CurlyDawg,

Jane Pauley (NBC news personality) was diagnosed with bipolar at age 49. Five months of corticosteroids and an anti-depressant sent her inpatient.

Ten years later, she is taking lithium.

Here is a 6.5 mins interview of her talking about her diagnosis

Jane Paulie mentioned bipolar 3...don't believe I've heard of that one.

Poll BP3 not officially recognized, I don't think.

From what I've read, some researchers claim that a 3rd type of bipolar condition exists which is drug induced. Clinically depressed folks given large doses of some anti-depressants have experienced manic or hypomanic symptoms, although prior to drug treatment they had never shown any signs of being bipolar.

Others in the field suggest that they were just improperly diagnosed to begin with, were always bipolar, & the anti-depressant merely helped reveal that.
