Quote:
You will begin to exercise by walking on a treadmill or pedaling a stationary bicycle. The rate of exercise, or degree of difficulty will gradually increase. You will be asked to exercise until you feel exhausted.

At regular intervals, the lab personnel will ask how you are feeling. Please tell them if you feel chest, arm or jaw pain or discomfort, short of breath, dizzy, lightheaded, or any other unusual symptoms. It is normal for your heart rate, blood pressure, breathing rate, and perspiration to increase during the test. The lab personnel will watch for any symptoms or changes on the ECG monitor that suggest the test should be stopped.

After the test you will walk or pedal slowly for a couple of minutes to cool down. Your heart rate, blood pressure and ECG will continue to be monitored until the levels begin returning to normal.

Although the appointment lasts about 60 minutes, the actual exercise time is usually between seven and 12 minutes.

This video says, "every two to three minutes the speed or incline of the treadmill will gradually be increased."

The exercise usually lasts a total of 8 to 12 minutes.

Waves,

I did not run for my test. I had a chemical test so I can't tell you what to expect.

These two sites say that the test lasts a total of 8 to 12 minutes. I don't know how much you would be sweating. I could see carrying extra clothes --- but I'm weird. I carry stuff with me across town on errands as if I am going camping for the weekend.

Dear Waves,

This really really stinks. I'm sorry that your doctors did not pay attention to your reports of symptoms except to dismiss your concerns as anxiety.

They certainly should have sent you to a cardio mdoc to let that mdoc decide if any concern was warranted.

Good luck with the early morning drop off on Monday.

Heart oops!

Dear Bizi

i totally missed this post yesterday, i only saw it this morning... somehow...

yes boy that monitor dealy was a PITA. the most immediate worst thing about it was the ITCHING of those sticky things! arggghhh!!!!eek: soon as i saw time was up i ripped those things off so fast!!!! today, i have to transcribe my activity notes into their diary. right now they are still scattered between my cell phone agenda (from yesterday when i was in the city) and scribbled on post its. the idea of doing that makes me very nervous. i hate turning this kind of stuff in. so i am sort of detaching from it for now (no pun intended).

I am sorry this is causing so much anxiety for you. At least you can check these tests off your things to do list. and maybe you might have the go ahead to exercise.I knew the monitor was going to be a PITA, I did that many years ago and had all of the same tests that you had and they found irregular beats that ended up being stress. The irregular beats just went away.
i will have to lose weight before i can exercise, or i will damage my feet again. but once i do that, yes. and i'm going to work on that too.

i am sorry you had irregular heart beats. did you notice them before that? that's what people report as palpitations often, right? i have never noticed anything of that kind even with anxiety... i can have an increase in pulse if i get extreeeemley anxious or enraged, but that is normal. i told the cardio about the time i went running and pushed hard and my pulse stayed pegged over 100 for like 6 hours and she just smiled like, well what do you expect!.. LOL! anyway, she felt it was most likely because i pushed too hard - the stress test will show if there is more to it. (it will also give me an idea of how hard i can reasonably push, LOL.)

Quote:
I hope your chest pains go away.
thanks, no worries, i haven't had any more pain after the episode of acute precordial pain that radiated to the left neck and arm that set the doctors off in alarm bells finally. before that i had general chest pain - felt like intercostal muscles. seemed very clearly related to peaks and troughs and was when i went up to 50mg on the Zoloft. and last time, again when i was ramping up the Zoloft - i had 4 days of constrictive pain coming and going with breathlessness and weakness, but that was last year. cardio says no way we can tell what happened then.

i *hate* that i am going to have to roll out of bed at 6.30 latest tomorrow. and that is when it is so cold. later in the day it warms up to the 40's and 50's. this is a temperate zone... it started cooling in october, but last week it took another dive. yeah! brrrrr!

love you too. sorry for missing the post. i wasn't ignoring you on purpose.

ugh! 6;30 I hate having to get up early to go do stuff. But I know that you can do that, you are a very strong woman.
the irregular beats that I had were PVC premature ventricular contractions. I was having couples and triplets for a while. The whole process got me pretty worked up and they wanted to do a nuclear stress test, chemically induced, which cost $3000 at that time. I had a fit and said I can't afford that, you have insurance they said but I had a 10% co pay, I was healthy and there was no reason I souldn't just take the regular run on the treadmill stress test.(cost $1500) They conceded. It turned out fine and was not difficult but I was in good shape at the time.
I forget when is the stress test?I know you turn back in the halter monitor back in tomorrow...is your test this week?
I will be thinking of you and sending calming thoughts your way.
always do for that matter.

i am not worried about the strain or the time or sweating per se. i know they have you run to exhaustion unless they see a reason to stop you before that on the monitors, so it's reasonable to expect to sweat at least some. i am really out of shape so i might poop out before sweating much.

i have a couple clothing issues. the fact that it is too cold to go out in sweaty clothes is just one of them. i'm going to bring everything i may want/need, and hope they will let me have my way. everything will include a change of outdoor pants, "just in case." considering i also carry extra layers around in winter i will have enough clothes to look like i am camping for the weekend also. that's fine.

thanks. i think there is a double reason they call it a stress test.... because just thinking about it is so stressful!!!!

lol. my dad did one but not here. he was probably just a little older than i am now, but he was not in great shape then - still probably better than i am now. he told me oh it's easy at first, till they speed that thing up, again and again, and then you are there going oh no, aghhh, arrghhh! he was funny. again, i know the point is to run you to exhaustion within safety parameters. i've done that myself so i am not afraid of that. in fact i'd really like to know some stuff... like what does my personal heart rate top out at. i've had it hit 200... was that safe... etc. so i expect this will provide some answers. if they aren't obvious - i will ask!

there is one thing i'd really like to know before but even asking you guys will not help because things you can take for granted in the US are sometimes not standard practice - or even considered ridiculous/superfluous here. i don't know anyone here who has taken this test. so, i will just have to wait.... sigh.

right. off to transcribe my diary now. not much time left. i want to put it in excel first so i can "edit." then into their booklet.

thanks for all the support guys.

Red face

200 is not safe in my opinion. and to have a resting heart rate of 100 for 6 hours is not normal I don't l think.. they suggest vigorous exercise at 80% of your max heart rate, I think 60% is considered aerobic. But am unsure of this...good to ask them what is safe.

I didn't make it for my stress test, I had to stop, and go to the hospital
and do the nuclear one. So I am no help on this one.

I can also say, I've had I believe all the test your having except the halter.
I'm kind of surprised I haven't had that one, but who knows.

I've had many echo's and many ekg's. SO maybe they find other ways.

Thumbs up delivered EKG halter... moving on with the day...

gahh... woke up at 6.15 spontaneously, before alarm went off... left at 7, got there 7.45 (they said preferably by 8). it was not bad... until i had to take the subway home, OMG, that train was jampacked... traveling away from the city! i could not figure that one out!!! took me totally off guard!!! well after that any and all thought of stopping someplace on the way home to do something useful vanished. i just wanted out, out, away... sigh.

well i got home at 8.45, couldn't believe it. folks still asleep, haven't even snuck in the kitchen for tea i see. ha!. maybe i will make it for them now it is close to 10. mom wants to shower before she goes out, so she will be all freaky deaky if she gets up much later... and run around and make me all freaky deaky too.

well. i am so glad to be rid of that thing, let me tell you. whew!!!! and i had no trouble finding my way. so i can go to the stress test on my own (i will be less stressed that way! )

i am working on the calendar. i got all the dates, seasons, time changes, and holidays in by friday and have been starting on the photos. 2 down. 10 to go. (i have dates for january 13th but no picture because it is only in case one needs to write down appointments. it shares a page with a mincal of the rest of 2013).

off i go. make tea for parents... so now the noise - oops, i mean the day - really begins.
