These two are both decongestants -- can help with runny nose and stuffiness, as add-on treatment, but by themselves they are ineffective against an allergic reaction. For that, we need to find you an antihistamine, proper.

I hear you. The same thing happened to me. What I used to take has been taken off the market where I live, along with most of meds of its kind. I am going through the newer ones, trying to find one that will work at least partially.

Steve, can you tell me the name of the third thing she recommended?

Did it give you side effects, or did it simply not work?

Red face

I don't think you should be microwaving your food it breaks down all of the nutrition.
research it.

Well, actually I did, a good while back.

Where are you getting this information? Can you provide a link or names?

I read several articles a while back -- apparently different sources -- about broccoli losing nutrients. More research revealed that: 1) a study done on cooking methods had been misrepresented in an article; 2) numerous internet articles all cited as references the article containing the misrepresented info.

Going to the original study, it turned out that the only thing proven was that cooking broccoli in a lot of water for over five minutes, regardless of method, caused nutrient loss.

Maybe you read something different than I did, but I wouldn't buy in without a lottt of cross-checking. I saw first-hand that there is a lot of hype against microwaves out there on the internet, that has no scientific basis.

Hi Waves. The third one is Chlorpheniramine Maleate. It's a antihistamine. If I take it with the others I may not sleep. I took it two days recently, and I had the panic disorder intensify. It has a molecule that could help the other two medications.

The medication that my allergy doctor had me on was a generic called by the names Atrohist,Protuss-DM,and the latest generic name was Durahist D Caplet Pro.

I had been getting this medication at a CVS out here in the country, and they stopped getting them. I called the pharmacist in the State Capital city in which I lived most of my life, and asked him if they had that medication anymore. He said no. I said this is what I can do? Are there any medications like that anymore? He said yes but he didn't want me to drive all the way there(70,or 80 miles)to get a proscription. He said to talk to my local pharmacist about the medication, and what he could come up with in place of the proscription. So they where the three medications that he came up with. I just don't know!?

The main thing that I had to get straight out here first was the mental health system treatments, where they where, and what to do,and traveling to these cities to get the counciling, and mental health meds that I needed. That was the only health priority that I was proceeding with.

Allergy treatments were hard to initiate, and when I finally got treated, and helped, the insurance company stopped one allergy shot a week. By that time I was having a hard time with another situation, and put the allergy treatments on the back burner of my mind.

I'm living in the middle of nowhere now. Everything is way down the road, and the closest big city is about 30,to 40 miles away. The streets are all hard to find, because I don't go there to often. The big city that I grew up in is 70,to 80miles away.

Oh my. I'd better stop here. BF

Bizi Your right. I should be using the oven. I just don't want a greasy dusty build up of dust from the oven. I'm worried about dust.

I've been eating more fruits, and vegetables daily recently. I've warmed up some soup recently in the microwave oven.

Your right though. Thank you for the advice. BF

Steve,

According to the Harvard Medical School Family Health Guide, microwaving is fine:

http://www.health.harvard.edu/fhg/up...utrition.shtml

Quote:
Some nutrients do break down when they’re exposed to heat, whether it is from a microwave or a regular oven. Vitamin C is perhaps the clearest example.
Quote:
So, as a general proposition, cooking with a microwave probably does a better job of preserving the nutrient content of foods because the cooking times are shorter.
Quote:
Vegetables, pretty much any way you prepare them, are good for you, and most of us don’t eat enough of them.
And the microwave oven?
A marvel of engineering, a miracle of convenience — and sometimes nutritionally advantageous to boot.

Thank you Bizi,Waves, and Mari for the cooking input. I cook for one.

I give the cat canned Cat food. She's very picky sometimes about what she wants to eat even though I get her very expensive cat food. She spreads it around the bottom of the bowl, and it dries up. I hate it when she does that. Oh well. BF

Default Chlorpheniramine Maleate

Steve,

Call that pharmacist in the capitol back to talk about the panic attack with the Chlorpheniramine Maleate. Anxiety is listed as a side effect.
  • Perhaps it interferes with other medications.
  • Perhaps you can benefit from a smaller dose.
  • Perhaps you could take it every other day.
  • Maybe you could time it in such a way as it has a half life of 21-27 half life.
  • . . which is why I think you could ask if it could help you every other day.

This site suggests not to take it with caffeine, aspirin, tylenol, or Topamax
http://www.drugs.com/drug-interactio...&generic_only=

It seems to have some SSRI and/ or SNRI properties -- the pharmacist would know more.

++++
Someone here will correct me if I am wrong as I have no experience with these meds.

Default re: chlorpheniramine

Steve

Chlorpheniramine is the one I used to take, so I know it quite well. It is unlikely to help unless taken in the full dosage and very regularly.

It does have SNRI/SSRI activity... SSRIs were actually developed based on a sister drug (brompheniramine -- same chemical except with a Bromine atom in place of a Chlorine)

That said, these antihistamines have very low SSRI activity compared to our antidepressants, but in some people it could produce effects, especially perhaps in combination. I believe you take Luvox? I never noticed anything when taking chlorpheniramine with Zoloft, but ... different bodies we have.

Given the bad reaction, I'd avoid brompheniramine (Dimetapp, Dimetane) because of the very similar structure. I'd preferentially also avoid Actifed (triprolidine, structurally dipheniramine).
