Hubby got a recent call from someone saying they were from the IRS.

I told him to hang up immediately next time.


He calmed down a little when he spoke to our accountant.
The accountant said the IRS contacts people only through snail mail.

Even so, hubby needed to talk about the call with me for a few days.
(He was incensed that someone could try to get away with fooling
people in order to get their information / social security number.)

I think in the future he should never answer the phone.

i wonder what is happening. i heard of this happening to two more seniors recently. i guess it is just not against seniors. on the irs website they should put that they only contact by mail.

If you run a business with employees, you may be audited for your pensions for them. This is separate from INCOME TAX.

My husband did pensions only. He knew most of the providers around the state here because he was there over 40+ yrs.
So he could call them up. He did not speak to taxpayers for income tax.

Some small businesses worked out of their homes, and he did go to those locations at times to audit their PENSIONS, not income tax.

So one cannot say the IRS never calls people. What they mean is that individual INCOME TAX issues are sent letters (and not notified by phone or email). But there are many aspects to the IRS... not just income tax etc.

What a person needs to do is learn about phishing via phone and email. This is very important today because dishonest people like to use fear and greed to get your attention, for nefarious purposes. They will tell you that the IRS is after you or that you won a prize, or someone left you money, in return for your clicking on their nasty link or giving them information to use against you.

bobby, did they give you the real irs phone number or did you look that up? just curious.

i looked up the number.somebody i know tried to call the number given but there was no answer. i don't know why he called the number because he thought it was a scam.

Yep when it comes to income taxes they send a letter in the mail.

I know my brother-in-law and his wife got one. So have we.
They were definitely legitimate. So it wasn't unexpected either
for us.
