But remember this place was developed at the beginning as a temporary forum to fill in til hastypastry was repaired- but now that we are permanent - we can go in any direction we decide to.

That's how we can make our own identity- we won't have to stick with neuro, we can branch out.

Wow, Lara - do I ever see what you are talking about. Heavens, even the Merck Manual for patients is a vastly better resource than that. They sell their books yearly, so they have to keep on top of things.

I'm with you, in other words. This forum can have whatever links it wants.

Hey Rick! YES, you are completely right. It must be short, hopefully catchy (for easy remembering), easy to spell.

Maybe it would also be possible to add a "bookmark this page" button so they don't have to remember twice??

Even earlier today, I was with MrsD on this one. To me, Neuro reminded me of a doctor or medical clinic, a hospital floor or wing. Didn't feel right to me -- but I've softened on it a bit. The MAJOR part of my turn-around is my conviction that there should be no confusion whatsoever that this forum is for Neurology patients and Neurological conditions. But both those words are too long and difficult to spell.

Hi Theresa,

Thanks for asking . YES, Gluten Sensitivity/ Celiac Disease causes wide ranging neurological disease. I asked for the forum to be set up on BrainTalk because the neurological manifestations are widely unrecognized (because our doctors think of it as primarily a gastrointestinal disease, but it can present soley as neurological disease).

Celiac Disease can be asymptomatic, and neurological disease can occur with or without gastrointestinal symptoms. The neurological problems are caused by both immunological factors (Celiac Disease is an autoimmune disease) and nutritional factors (particularly deficiencies of folate, B1, B6, B12, E).

Because a gluten free diet is the only treatment, our forum does focus a lot on dietary advice and information on nutritional deficiency.

From: Neurologic Manifestations of Gastrointestinal Disease by Mark B. Skeen, MD, Neurologic Clinics, Volume 20, Number 1, February 2002

"Neurologic disease associated with gluten sensitivity or celiac disease includes a wide range of manifestations:

Central nervous system (CNS) manifestations include dementia, cerebellar ataxia, myelopathy, encephalopathy, brain stem encephalitis, progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy,chronic, progressive leukoencephalopathy, progressive myoclonic ataxia, seizures, isolated CNS vasculitis, and a syndrome of celiac disease with encephalopathy and bilateral occipital calcifications.”

“Several reports document the existence of peripheral neuropathy in association with celiac disease.”

I would like the new forum name to keep a focus on neurology. I like NeuroTalk and BrainStorm. Back to regular scheduled discussion on naming of the forum~ just couldn't pass on an opportunity to answer your question .
