I have decided that I'm not going to waste any more energy trying to get my old computer to do anything.

When I have the money saved, I'm going to buy a notebook. From
Tigerdirect.com. I've bought stuff from them and everything worked fine.

I do not like touchpads. I gather (with the available usb ports), that I can hook up a mouse to this. It has dvd drive, and it's cheap. Not cheap enough for me yet, but SOMEDAY.

I would just use it to go on the internet. If I could find something cheaper I'd buy it. But everything is over $200 so for the price, this one is as good as the others.

Maybe next year. Not now. But I'm tired of trying to figure out my old computer.

Just a note: Having a 64bit processor does not get you a 64bit operating system. I may have misread where you are actually using the 64 bit version of Win XP. If you have the X86 (32 bit) version of Win XP then you are on a 32 bit operating system and so that would lead to some of the stuff you were trying with the 64bit files.

I wonder why when you inserted the device into the USB port and the system recognized that you had a new device, it did not go into the install new hardware routing and then located the msi on the CD automatically and install the driver for you. At least then you could have bypassed the MFR auto install GUI and explored the disc to find the actual software installer for your wifi adapter.

That is one of the reasons I finally made the jump directly to Window 7 ultimate 64 bit operating system. You would be amazed at how intuitive it is when you install it at looking at your system and then putting a very effective base driver system on for you. Then in the subsequent update cycles actually getting the correct MFR drivers installed. When I do a fresh install of Win 7, it automatically finds my wireless keyboard and mouse combo and installs the MFR specific driver and software for it. The same for my Logitech HD Cam...GPU, Onboard Sound etc. I do not even need to have my Motherboard CD it does it all.

I need to go back and read more of your post because there are a couple of things I am wondering about your system and I may have missed in your comments. One being if you have a Desktop, why not just go direct from your router? I am assuming then it is out of practical range and you are wanting the wifi connector to get internet or home network access.

the installer needs this RPC to be set on "started " or "automatic" also or it won't work.

but you might check to see if it is started or not & if is set on automatic in the services section.

Do not understand what I am supposed to do. There was a command given (looked like it was in Dos).

Why on earth do they make these things so complicated.

I'm so glad I saw this. I was thinking of doing the same thing with my old desktop. I am now rethinking this. If you get it to work, let us know. I wonder if trying a different brand of adapter would work. Something like Belkin.

How I get to the services section.

Control Panel
Administrative Tools
Services

mine is listed alphabetically
scroll down to the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) mine is set to started & automatic

while there double check the Windows Installer - mine is set to manual, but you could try setting it to automatic.

to change these double click the name and a pop up will come up and make the changes there.

then reboot and try the cd one more time???

Nothing to do with the Netgear adaptor. It was the Windows Installer that is the PROBLEM!!!!

I brought it back this morning and got my $27 dollars back. Thank god.

On to bigger and better things.
