In general.... laptops are not long lived computers. IMO. Hubby's
HPs from work average 2-3 yrs and then are replaced. We've had problems with both the older Dell (harddrive failure) and the newer Win 7 that somehow got a devastating virus. My old Dell tower is plugging along ...I think it is 8 yrs old now. It does have a new harddrive--son replaced the old one because he didn't trust it --said it was making a funny noise--(dells have poor harddrives)...so now it is a seagate big one. We've also added RAM to it over the years. Knock on wood....
