thanks so much for the information. I have written everything down and will go and buy these after the Thanksgiving Holiday (Happy Turkey Day to you and yours by the way).

I am always amazed that I am continually learning things about my computer. Then I go and watch a tv commercial and I really find out what I DON'T KNOW.

The Blackberry's, the new phones that do EVERYTHING, and you can turn them upside down and they change format, etc. And the new phone that comes with a keyboard that CLICKS when you type.

I only wish I was 25 again so I can really make use of this stuff. Everybody in my age group, either do not have a computer and do not DEFINITELY own a cell phone.

They look at me like I am out of my mind when I go on my computer. To me it's the information super highway. I learn stuff every single day.

I do have a question. Oh, I'd like to tell you something. You indicate that you are a tech person.

I was chosen (among 300 employees), over 30 years ago, to go to IBM computer school. I had the first desktop computer (an IBM of course) and a dot matrix printer. It was so loud they had to buy a special cover for it. It did he dot matrix thing ALL DAY LONG.

No one in my company would speak to me because I was the one chosen to go to computer school. Then, 2 years later, when all the other executive secretaries got their own computers, who do you think they would call us all day long and ask "What does the F10 key do, how do I set my margins.

I'll never forget that time. The word processing software was known as MULTIMATE ADVANTAGE. God, this is taking me back.

And the WHOLE HARDRIVE WAS 20 MGS. Can you believe this? 20 megabyte hard-drive.

I had to quit my job and stay at home to care for my son, so I bought my own computer and did typing at home for a judge.

Do you know what I paid for that first computer that I bought? $3,700.

I will never forget that price.

Times have changed, haven't they?

So I wanted to let you know that you are corresponding with a genuine former computer student of the IBM company.

Now for my question: "years ago, they never had viruses or anything like that. You had AOL, you went online, you had fun. Now I have to watch out every single day for spyware, malware, adware, this ware and that ware, and let's not forget that XP 2009 virus. Good god. What happened?

my first computer i orked on was in 1977 my first day of high school.

i saw a sign that said computer lab and wandered in. here was a room full of guys laughing and chatting across the room but only had teletypes to type on.

from that day forwrd ive always been interested. i have had the trs80 computer which operted on 8 1/2 in floppy disks. my first online computer was a comodore vic-20. back in the days we all just chatted and communicated through bbs chatrooms.

i worked in the datacaenters in early 80s and my first laptop was a toshiba that ran off of two floppy disks. no memory. too much fun then.

skip forwrd 20 plus years.

with the advent of the internet and the openess of whats available online. there rose a need for security precautions on the net. first is was mainly for the windows operating system... cause it was the big dog... everyone wanted to try to get a piece of him.

in the early days of aim i was a member of a group and we had the most fun in thechatrooms with kickiers, punters, name changers. etc,,,,, this is the time computer hacking was in its infancy for the internet. true hackers were in fact members of clans that wanted to see if the other one could outdo the other meber. not by hacking corporations or softwares but by designing and writing code to get the other one off the internet the fastest.

but then there were those who malicously did it for fun and glory to others outside the cirles.

as the internet gre and its abilityies. so did the complexity of programs and securitys. and im sure it will continue todo so.

keep your computer up to date. run antiviral software regularly and dont click on any screens that you arent sure f. when in doubt.

ctrl =+ alt + del and under applications select window and hit end task. to be safe.

the internet is a wounderous land of amazement even each day i go on.

unfortunately where there is a yin there is a yang the cycle is always circular.

And I can remember when (before we had fax machines) and I was a secretary, there was a telex machine. My boss would get telexes from all over the world and we had this lovely little Indian woman who could read telexes (how does one read all these punched out codes??) But she was able to do this. I never understood that at all.

Now I have a really important question about the control alt delete thing.
My husband is forever getting these little pop up things on the right side of the computer (on the bottom), where the date and time are.

He tells me "something popped up last night on the bottom right and I kind of thought it might be from Verizon, telling me I had a virus an click on the balloon to fix the problem".

I said "Oh my god, you clicked on it??" he said "no, you always told me not to, so I just x'd it out"

I said 'don't click anywhere on it, not even the X because it will self download".

He said "so what do I do"? and I said "hit control, alt, delete, and end task".

He's not sure "and neither am I', exactly what to select...BEFORE WE HIT END TASK.

Will it be the first thing that shows up after hitting control, alt, delete?.

So for example, if we get a popup on the lower right that says "you might have an infection, a virus, ANYTHING", what exactly do we look for BEFORE we hit END TASK??

usually if you get a pop up ballon from the loer right task tray its from one f the programs running there. your antivirus progrm or a microsft remeinder.

when those pop up click on them. the ones you want o be careful of are ones that pop up on a website your unfamiliar with.

pop up windows that say hey click here to clean your computer are usually malware and spyware infected programs.


just remeber if its from the lower right corner its a reminder for a program you have installed.


as for the teletypes i could rread them after a few months of training as well as an ita2 holorith code punch card.

so this is years later but I hope I get an answer. I id a system recovery and the make cd box came upbut not even full screen, there are no options showing. Only about 1/4 of the screen and it does not say much. I can not get to the place tomake the discs. so what do I do now? I candrag it to the botom of the page but that is it, HELP!!!!!

can you grab the corner of the make cd box with your mouse cursor and drag it larger?
If so it would probably change to an arrow..

What kind of computer do you have?

Well I've been there and done that. I made the recovery disks right out of the box....YET I STILL RECEIVE THE REMINDER. I cannot stop it. Once I even went to where you start making the recovery disks and was told..only one set is allowed and you've used your quota. The reminder will not allow me to x it out, minimize it, delete it. The only way I can get rid of it is to go to the TaskManager and delete it. This is only a temporary fix...Within 20-30 minutes, I get the reminder again. I have an hp laptop using WIN 7. I may need some psychological help before this is over.... HELP PLEASE!!!

Did you try, put curses on object you want to remove,right click,drag to garbage ,then right click and empty recycle bin, Then reboot to see if it worked
