Default Tight feeling

Okay so long story short (as i havent slept in 3 days now) i had a few root canals (to the back tooth and 3rd from back, sorry I don't know the names). Everything was fine and dandy (why people complain about RC I don't know).

Anyways it's been a few month's since I had those done and everything was fine. I also had some fillings done on my upper set.

This is the problem, the last week an a bit ive had a cold (a bad one) and towards the end of it my bottom row of teeth (side with the RCs) started to hurt REALLY bad. Really harsh strong stabbing pain etc. Only thing that helped was ice or swishing water around that part of the mouth and even then it only worked sometimes for 30 seconds, sometimes 30 minutes. It was also very sensitive to heat, so I broke out the ole Sensydone (Spelling maybe off (sorry IM TIRED).

So I finally passed out one day due to being just that tired and woke up my mouth feeling alot better. However now, I have a very 'tight' feeling on one particular tooth that had been filled. It is on the same side of the mouth as the RC work so I don't know if that has anything to do with it. Although this tooth is on the top and NOT bottom like the RC. Even water/ice will only settle it 5-10seconds tops. Painkillers dont do nothing, nothing seems too not even clove oil. Even tried salt in luke warm water, didnt feel a thing. Oh yeah one more note i THINK my gum has 'lowered' on this tooth if that makes sense but im not 200% sure. If I 'push' the tooth up or try to 'wiggle it' the pain will subside for a few minutes at most but not when pushing the tooth up, instead it hurts so bad pushing it up. Sounds like an infection to me, but Anyone wanna throw some at me

PS. I can't get a dentist yet as mine wont see me while I have a cold (atleast he didnt / wouldnt before).

Anybody got any ideas on what this problem could be?

From what I've been through, if a tooth reacts badly to heat and relieved by cold, it could be irreversible pulpitis, meaning the nerve could be dying. I would say it needs a root canal but Bryanna will throw tomatoes at me so I will stop here and see what she advises

I tried to edit my post to add something but it didn't work. It could be something else, it's just a shame that the dentist won't see you with a cold and you have to walk around in pain. Maybe you can find someone else? It may just be a cavity, I can't know...I just feel badly for you that he's postponing you.

Hi sparky,

When a tooth is painful and relieved somewhat by cold, it is indicative of a nerve dying. If you feel tightness and/or pressure around this tooth then that indicates inflammation usually the start of infection. If you get some relief by squeezing or moving the tooth with your fingers, that can indicate that the tooth is also fractured.

What could be aggravating the tooth is swollen sinuses from your cold. However, what you have described sounds the tooth has a problem.

You mentioned the gum looks higher on this tooth.... that can happen when there is an infection brewing in the tooth. It is referred to as an endo/perio condition. It occurs from the irritation of the bacteria below the gumline that is brewing from the inflammation.

Hopefully you can get in to see your dentist soon. In the meantime, it would be best to rinse 4 times a day with warm salt water. No mouthwash (like Listerine) with alcohol in it as that will only cause more irritation. Brush that tooth with a soft bristle toothbrush to keep the plaque off as much as possible.

Let us know how you're doing...
Bryanna

Thanks for the replies ladies and yeah im gonna go to the dentist next week early hopefully even if it feels fine again. Might aswell be on the safe side. Truth is i was lazy with my toothcare and im paying the price for it now. Oh well never too late to start caring is my motto....

Finally a pain killer that worked on it (well seems to) is Nurofen (Ibuprofen 200mg). At the moment im referring to them however as OMG! for reasons, well obvious.

Bryanna ive read quite a few of your posts around this part of the forum and I have another question for you. Any 'working' inexpensive ways to try and whiten the teeth without damaging them or making them stain badly instead? Ive read alot of 'home remedies' for it but since you seem to be in the 'field of dentistry' I figure why not get your opinion and knowledge on the subject. They arent horrible dont get me wrong they arent black or nothing just be nice to tidy em up a lil and some say home remedies are as good as a dentist cleaning them fully or even the expensive 'Whiten your teeth in 30 days!!!!" products. I did have them cleaned up some and 'gum work' as he called it done which was actually more irritating during it than the root canals (hell i loved the RCs i didnt feel a thing lol) during the rest of the work. He was surprised actually at my threshold for pain and having stuff done at once (i had quite a bit done not saying how much as its a lil embarrassing). But im paying the price for being a smoker, coffee drinker and well lazy for a while with my teeth. Im man enough to admit it

Hi sparky,

The best at home remedy for "brightening" the teeth is baking soda. You can put a little bit on a wet toothbrush either under or over your toothpaste and brush with it. Only use a little bit because it can be irritating to the gum tissue if you use too much.
