Question Prescription-Strength PreviDent

Hello!

I've been using this for about a year. A medication I took for awhile caused rapid tooth decay and it freaked me out, as I had never had any dental issues prior. I had to have 2 teeth pulled and another was caught in time to get a filling.
I wanted to know the 'best/strongest' protecting toothpaste I could get my hands on.....and my dentist wrote a prescription for PreviDent 1.1% sodium fluoride. Super.

I just recently became privy to the fact that fluoride is actually very BAD for us!

The directions on this prescription says to brush for 1 minute and NOT to rinse.

Is this 'BAD' ??

The 'fine' print reads......"Description: Self-topical neutral fluoride 1.1% sodium fluoride for use as a dental caries (?) in adults. This is not a dentifrice."....

My main Q is this: What does fluoride do to us that is 'bad' ?

I know I could google this question, but I'd rather hear it from you..... because every time I get on google and start looking stuff up, I end up convinced I have 101 terminal diseases.....

Thank you much!

Hi Rae,

Fluoride is actually a component of toxic waste ... here is just a little snippet from the American Medical Association dated 1943...

The Journal of the American Medical Association, Sept. 18, 1943, states that fluorides are general protoplasmic poisons — they inhibit enzyme systems, and water containing 1 part per million (ppm) or more fluoride is undesirable. This was the AMA's stand on fluoridation shortly before the U.S. Public Health Service endorsed nationwide fluoridation. (See 1-3).

Fluoride today is the same fluoride back then. In my opinion, it should never be promoted as a substance that promotes anything healthy. However, everyone has the right to make their own choices.

A very popular and well studied substance that actually increases salivary flow and decreases the incidence of tooth decay is called Xylitol. Here's a bit of info on that...http://www.xylitol.org/dental-benefits-of-xylitol

In the two offices that I work in as well as a general consensus amongst my colleagues who promote the use of Xylitol in their practices, we have all seen a decrease in tooth decay and gum disease with patients who use Xylitol daily. A company called Spry makes a chewing gum, mints, mouthwash, toothpaste....etc. There are other companies who make it also, but I am most familiar with Spry.

For so many years, in spite of the professional literature against the use of fluoride, many dentists still promote its use. One reason is because they have not read the literature on any substitute such as Xylitol. Another huge reason is because it's an easy money maker. The average charge to do an in office topical fluoride treatment is $35 to 55 per person, per cleaning. The fluoride product itself costs about $3.00 per bottle and the bottle lasts for several hundred applications. There are no lasting positive effects from the twice a year topical application but it can sure make you sick if you swallow it!

Rae, since you are concerned about using fluoride, perhaps you would be willing to try the Xyltiol? As a habit, I personally chew a piece of the Spry gum after every meal and I use the mints instead of eating sugar candy. Their products are delicious! A good web source for them is at vitacost.com. They have great prices on that site!

Hope this info is helpful... let us know what you think

Shocked Wowww...

.....it's all about the MONEY! Unbelievable. This has me speechless.

I will absolutely use the xylitol !
This all boils down to 'Innocent Ignorance'....... Somehow we've all (figuratively speaking) been 'programmed' to be under the assumption that fluoride is a 'good' thing.

This makes me want to walk in and SLAP my dentist! He's definitely in this for the money, no two ways about it. I've taken all my kids to him since he started his practice almost 20 years ago! He's expensive.....but I understand all about the costs of overhead and keeping current with technology and the high-end equipment he pays for in his freestanding facility......and he employs at least 3 or 4 hygienists, etc...... I've gladly put my trust in him and wanted to support his growing practice.
Finding out about this fluoride issue feels like one big slap in the face!
This is what we get for putting our trust in these dentists!
All our dental is out-of-pocket......and I seem to have fallen prey to all these 'bite-wing' xrays and fluoride treatments, etc.....thinking it's worth it to keep my kids in good dental health.
What a crock!

I just cannot comprehend WHY the FDA has allowed this 'poison' substance to be used to the degree that most dentists use it.
And why/how it even gets in our drinking water in the first place!

Thank you for your input, Bryanna. I will most certainly use the xylitol!

......now.... off to my other thread regarding the fluorosis issue.....
more ranting! sorry

Rae,

I want to slap the face of many dentists every day... believe me, I have seen and heard it all!!

Now that you are more aware of the fluoride issue... you can refuse the topical treatments for both yourself and your children. Save your money and buy the xylitol for everyone to use! Kids love the gum and mints!

With regard to the bitewing xrays... I believe that they are necessary once a year. The radiation exposure is very minimal and it really is the only way to check in between the teeth for cavities.

The FDA as you may already know.... is not an organization that necessarily protects the consumer. It protects it's own interests first, people second, if that.

Fluoride has been dumped into the main water supply for many years. If you google fluoridated water per city or state, you will get more info than you care to read about it!

All we can do is seek knowledge and become our own advocates!!

Keep in touch..... let me know how you like the xylitol
