Angry Updates on my root canal

I had two root canals done last year (2014).

One was in January, and I should have known better. The symptoms of pain I was having were around the gum of the tooth, not the tooth itself. Last molar on the top left of my mouth (not the wisdom teeth - I've had those pulled out long ago).

My dentist (young, probably my age) didn't even investigate the source of my gum pain....he basically looked at my tooth, saw it had a deep filled cavity, and send me for a root canal.

I had another root canal on the bottom last tooth on my right side; that one had always been sensitive to heat and cold, and just when my dentist was on vacation last March, it basically blew up - I've never really experienced that much pain in my life. I'm actually glad I got that one root canalled. I haven't really noticed any adverse symptoms following that one.

The first root canal I got, on the top tooth though? Well...

I'd just like to say that I'm a very healthy individual; I don't drink, I've been vegetarian most of my life, I don't drink pop, anything. I've had braces as a child and I think that's where most of my dental issues stem.

I've noticed, ever since that root canal was done, my left nostril is consistently blocked, as though I have a cold. As I write this (a year and 5 months later), I feel like I need to take heaving breaths, like I'm out of breath, and while my right nostril is completely free, my left nostril is blocked. I have two sores on the left side of my mouth; I also have a painful pimple at the edge of my left nostril; I have a numb pain around the gum of that tooth (the initial reason why I went to see the dentist when he prescribed me a root canal)

There's not a day I don't wake up where my left nostril is not blocked. It's not 100% - there are days, or at least, hours in a day, when it is clear and I feel I can breathe normally. But more often than not, it is blocked.

I really don' tknow what to do... I feel like the initial reason I went to get a root canal done hasn't even been solved, and now I have an additional problem to contend with - I never had any sinus issues and I don't even get colds! I'm ridiculously healthy, apart from this .... should I pull it??

I think I'll try to find a biological dentist in the area... I hope they're not more expensive...It becomes really hard to think when one side of your nose is literally blocked...like why do I only have a cold on one side of my face?!

Arghh.

Wink Your thoughts appreciated!

Update!!! Also, need some advice.

In September 2015, my left upper eyelid became considerably swollen; at first, I thought it might be due to my contact lenses, and haven't worn them since. The eyelid was quite painful and stayed swollen for over a week - got prescribed an antibiotic ointment a week later, and within two days of using the ointment, the swelling subsided.

The swelling returned within a month, lasted about a week, subsided slightly, but the eyelid is darker and hasn't really been the same since in appearance.

A month following that, my right upper eyelid became swollen, and while that subsided on the day of my period, a lump (I assume a chalazion) remains.

This past Monday (Dec 28 2015) my left lower eyelid as well as a large area underneath the eye. became swollen, painfully so. While the swelling is slowly subsiding, it's leaving behind purple bruising beneath the eye.

My question is - can this have anything to do with the root canal I got in Jan 2014? (Root canal - left 2nd upper molar - wisdom tooth has been removed, so this is the last tooth in the left upper side)

I've had blepharitis since 2012, but I've never had swelling of any kind since Sept 2015.

PriME,

Root canaled teeth harbor infected nerve tissue irrelevant of how well or how poorly the rc procedure is done. This means that they are a chronic source of infection which can easily travel beyond the tooth. Symptoms of the proliferation of the infection may or may not ever offer any obvious "tooth" symptoms but frequently it will after the latent stage of the infection. With the infection there is also chronic inflammation which also easily moves beyond the infected tooth.

Blepharitis, which is considered an ocular allergy, indicates that something is triggering an abnormal inflammatory response and you may only be aware that it is affecting your eyes. Acute Blepharitis can be due to a bacterial infection but when it is chronic it can be a symptom of the early stages of a mast cell disorder. Mast cells are white blood cells that release histamine and other chemicals during an inflammatory or allergic reaction. When the immune system decides to react to the prolonged and/or overwhelming release of mast cells, physical symptoms will become evident. This reaction causes an increase in fluid secretions, swelling and inflammation any place in or on the body.

You can google Blepharitis and mast cell disorders for more detailed information. In my opinion, the type of doctor to see for a mast cell disorder may be a Functional Medicine doctor as these physicians seek to find the root cause of the disorder whereas conventional physicians tend to mask the symptoms with various antihistamines, acid blockers, and other drugs.

Other things that can be contributing factors to your eye and sinus issues on the left side are:

1) If the rc tooth was perforated during the root canal procedure as this would cause immediate release of the bacteria and disinfectants to be pushed beyond the apex of the tooth.

2) The tooth could be fractured which would allow bacteria etc to spread more easily beyond the tooth.

3) There could be an un-diagnosed communication or perforation between the tooth root and the sinus allowing bacteria to easily travel into the sinus.

4) There could be an un-diagnosed bacterial cyst protruding from the rc tooth (very common) that is not being picked up on a 2 dimensional dental xray.

I hope this information is helpful to you. Let me know your thoughts on it.

Hi Bryanna,

Thank you so much for your reply. The thing is, I've had blepharitis for a while (clogged eyelids) but they've never become swollen, nor with such consistency. I haven't used eye makeup nor contacts since Sept - so defintely its nothing exernal.

My left upper eyelid is swollen again (started yesterday) - this is about 2 weeks following the subsiding of swelling in my lower eyelid.

When I touch or put slight pressure in the eyelid, I can feel latent pain through the gum/root of the RC tooth area - the reason I had an RC of that tooth was because my gum there would be constantly hurting and the problem has really not been fixed because the gum still feels numb/tender in that area following the RC. *Edit: Also there is latent pain around the left ear as well. Forgot to add - left nostril is blocked. I usually don't notice this anymore, because my right nostril is free enough that I don't feel like my nose is blocked until I close my right one.

I live in Canada so I actually have no idea what a functional doctor is TBH - we have to go thru our family physician for everything, and he'd probably prescribe me another medication and deny that there could be any connection between my tooth issue and the eyelid.

Do you think it would be worth going to a natural/holistic dentist, and seeing what the cause of it is? If it really is the RC tooth?

I have a physical with my family physician booked 2 weeks from now, just to get bloodwork / other readings. I do think it is an immune issue but I don't feel tired/symptoms anywhere else but the eyelid. No fever either.

PriME,

Please re read my reply to you from 1/4/16.

Even though you live in Canada, you can go to the doctor of your choice. It may not be within your health coverage but if you are not getting help from your doctor other than repeated prescriptions, you may want to seek different help. You can seek a holistic dentist, but he may not be able to help you with the eye problems. That is most likely correlated to the infection from the tooth but at this stage there may also be an auto immune component which a dentist would not be knowledgeable about. However, a physician who practices functional medicine would be knowledgeable about the auto immune connection.

Here is a link to what Functional Medicine is and if you click on the upper right where it says find a practitioner it will take you to the page to find one.
