Question Shoulder blade pain after salivary gland removal

Hello,

I just had surgery a couple days ago to remove a tumor from my submandibular salivary gland. The surgery went well, but I now have a sharp pain near my left shoulder blade- on the lower part of it. I especially feel it when I take a deep breath. I can also feel the pain if I take my left arm and straighten it and move it across my body to my right side.

What do you think could have caused this? Any recommendations on what do to?

Thanks

Welcome to the NeuroTalk Support Groups.
Pain in the shoulder blades is not uncommon after having a general anaesthetic.

If I was you I'd definitely mention this to your doctor though.

Edited to add: You need to make sure you don't have an infection and
it may have something to do with nerve damage during the surgery. Like referred pain.
Please talk to your doctor.

Okay, so would it just normally go away after after awhile? Do you think getting a massage would help? And I'm definitely going to call my doctor on Monday to see what he says.

Could it possibly be a pinched nerve from how I was positioned during the surgery? I'm actually not sure how I was positioned- whether I was on my side or not.

Thanks.

Default Hi James

Welcome to Neuro Talk. If this surgery is just a few days old, I would certainly call the doctor. Usually in your discharge papers it will say, if there is unusual pain or discharge, fever etc. to check with the doctor. He won't mind, and it would put you at ease to talk or go in to see him. Even on a weekend, after surgery that is what they would want you to do. ginnie

Hi James,

What type of anesthesia did you have? Was it just a local anesthetic or were you completely asleep? Was the surgery done in a hospital or dental office?
Did you eat or drink anything prior to the surgery.... if so, what and how long before the procedure?
