Five Truths About Fear

1. The fear will never go away as long as I continue to grow.

2. The only way to get rid of the fear of doing something is to go out… and do it .

3. The only way to feel better about myself is to go out… and do it.

4. Not only am I going to experience fear whenever I’m on unfamiliar territory, but so is everyone else.

5. Pushing through fear is less frightening than living with the underlying fear that comes from a feeling of helplessness.


If everybody feels fear when approaching
something new in life,
yet so many are out there “doing it”
despite the fear,
then we must conclude that
Fear is not the problem.

I had to print this out and put it on the wall in front of my desk again. Fear keeps me from doing new things and being stuck. For me, it is helpful to know that all people experience fear. The one that hits home the most with me is number Five. There usually comes a point that you realize that the fear of being helpless is far worse than playing it safe by avoiding fear. That's when growth begins. *sigh

That's a lesson I come to again and again.

I don't KNOW about these sayings, Sorry. I am finding the world alot Scarier than ever out there. Sometimes FEAR is not JUST an emotion, it's a Survival Tactic. Over the past 10 or so years I am finding my environment a lot more dangerous. It doesn't really matter where I go the Dangerous element seems to be there. Innocent situations suddenly erupt into Nasty Events. I try to keep an open mind about this but it becoming more and more Clear to me that our World is a very Dangerous place.

I am basicly a happy person but after these encounters with elements of our society, it takes me a while to calm down. When "someone" comes at you yelling and swearing and waving their arms and acting like they are going to HURT or maybe even KILL you, it affects you. It changes you. I don't LIKE the way I feel after a near miss but I guess it's better than having my brains beat in and ending up in a coma or dead. people are out there getting shot whilke sitting in their cars minding their own business. Some of our Fears ARE justified from REAL Danger. And for people to tell you to go out and face them, well, that's just suicide.

I'm not talking about irrational or unjustified FEAR, I am talking about REALITY. And it makes me angry when people don't SEE what's going on all around us.

I live everyday with REAL Fear of my surroundings. It used to be a nice neighborhood and still can be BUT if people don't stop and look around and SEE what's going on, well, what else can I say?? Protect yourself, it's Dangerous out there.

Wiix, the book wasn't addressing those types of fears. Fears that are real and reality-based are there for a reason. Like for our survival. It is talking about fears like meeting new people or getting a job or just plain facing the things that keep us from living a full life.

You'd have to read the book to understand. I remember when this book first came out years ago, I didn't understand or agree with the premise of feel the fear and do it anyway either. But now that I have read the book there is a lot of psychological truths in it based on real life and real people. And the five things above sums it up, in my mind.

Well, I had an "Event" a few days ago and I am still feeling the effects. I wasn't scared before it happened but afterwards I felt weak, shaky and sick to my stomach. Sometimes when this happens I get visual problems for a few days, I am still having them now and it's been 4 days. I don't want to go out, I don't feel ready yet. I am just doing what I Have to do until I get over this one. I wish I was sleeping.

Hi Everyone, I had to get over fear. What I realized is that this fear that we carry every day is with us because we acquired it as a child. We acquired it as a child because we grew up in an insecure environment and internalized all of these feelings with the limited thought processes of a young child. Our thinking and processing abilities improve as we grow and mature. Children simply do not have the capabilities to handle less than ideal environments. These thoughts and feelings stay with us until we deal with them as adults. This is exactly what I did and am happy to say that I was able to rid myself of all of them. My baggage is gone and now I can calmly enjoy my environment of today.

Hi, you are very right. so how did you get past it. For me i do not remeber alot of my childhood but i grew up with a skin disorder and was teased alot. Iam taking hypnotherapy on MOndayto see if it helps. i deal withmnay disorders so it is hard to deal withtham all. O love this site just joined it a few minutes ago.
