The formulation of an effective treatment for MS clearly depends on knowing the cause of the disease. The treatment which is suggested in this essay assumes that dietary factors are the main cause of MS onset and progression because such a cause best fits the extensive epidemiological data base and is theoretically plausible. The data and reasoning for interpreting a dietary cause for MS are presented in the companion essay, Multiple Sclerosis and Food Hypersensitivities.
http://www.direct-ms.org/bestbet.html Pretty interesting stuff. Ever since I've changed my eating habits I've felt much better. My diet is not as limited as the one mentioned in this article but I think I may just give the Best Bet Diet a go. If anything it will help me lose more weight.

I've changed my eating habits frequently, for the better. I feel better when I cut beef and satuated fat from my diet. But, I refuse to cut out Choc chip cookies..
If I knew that a certain food causes MS sx, I would drop it like a hot potato. I do not think that MS, itself, is caused by diet, however.

Kelly - I have heard and read a couple of articles/essays on leaky gut syndrome. It makes sense to me and yet I have not found any concrete studies done with its relation to MS. At any rate, I did do the Swank diet for a while and definitely noticed a difference. I blew by eating red meat and never went back on it. I really need to though as I know for a fact I felt better and healthier with less MS symptoms.
The diet in the article is similar to the Swank diet. Only the Swank diet doesn't require all the supplements this diet does. It does require cod liver oil 1 tsp every day and 1 multivitamin. |

Typical day for me (throw in other low fat goodies like fresh fruits etc):
1. Cereal or oatmeal for breakfast. On weekend, egg beaters (or egg whites from whole eggs) with green peppers/onions/sliced turkey in olive oil in the pan, then put on whole grain or whole wheat toast (mmmm!) 2. Lunch is easy. Either sandwich with chicken/turkey, or chicken variation of some lean cuisine (yeah packaged food, I'm lazy). 3. Rice or pasta, with a large portion of meat or a soy or veggie burger for dinner. I snack on stuff like cereal (Special K Vanilla Almond is amazing!!!) and eat prunes once a day. Fat free yogurt as well. I basically still to the above 99% of the time. Vacation is a bust generally haha!... but you're allowed to cheat a little if you ask me, provided you always go back to your 'routine'. All in moderation!.. it takes a while to find eating you enjoy. I use a lot of sodium free spices and barely use margarine at all (I have the Becel vegan stuff, and it's actually pretty awesome). Swank etc diets WORK. I can feel the benefits on my health now that I've been doing this for 2+ years. It took a while for me to begin to see how much it helped to cut red meat and bad fats (or greatly reduce them).

I am extremely close to being on the makers diet. I do eat the occasional lobster (no shell food on that diet) but other than that...im really close to being on the money with that diet.
I have gone gluten/milk free for years on end while my DD was here. she is a severe celiac child, and when she left for her own life, it took us a while, but we did get some stuff added back in. We make 99% of what we eat. We eat mac and cheese,we just dont open a box for it. We eat peaches, but dont pop a can for them. We dont eat high fructose corn syrup or drinks that contain it. We normally drink water. Our eggs/beef/chicken/milk and produce come from the local farms around here. I have eaten this way a long long time, and got MS anyway.
