4 toes are confirmed broken. The ER cast has been traded for the big HEAVY plastic boot. It can only be removed when I take a shower. This will be a six week situation. The plastic boot is huge. Wardrobe is affected, especially concerning nighttime bathroom excursion.
I am not a happy camper. DH left for Dallas on Monday. He comes home Thursday. Neighbor is putting mail and newspaper on door handle in the AM. When I was a teenager, I went with my best friend on a visit to a shut-in to bring food and give the woman a little company. I am that woman. Six weeks is a long time at this moment. |

Cyn, will you get to go to PT to get whirlpool therapy later on? That usually helps heal it, even before the boot is off for good.
No one to stay with you while your DH is away? Please be careful. I hope you have a porta potty in your bedroom with lid and arm rails, next to the bed. Many people do that when a trip to the bathroom is needed at night. I know people with bowel/bladder urgency and one bathroom in the house, buy one of those chair with pot and lid for their bedroom, for emergencies. You never know. I hope you have no pain. ![]()

thanks all. I am feeding off the well wishes. Depression is saying awful things in my head. Staying strong (which is how others in my family perceive me, what a bunch of bull) is not making my own thoughts go to a "happy" place.
Spasms in the night are brutal. Night before it was the right foot that kept banging hard edges on the cast during the night. Solved that problem by wrapping the plastic cast in an ace bandage to cover hard pointed edges. Ultimate "grunge" look. Last night, the left foot big toe spasms were strong enough to lift the heavy cast off the mattress. I wonder if it did more damage to the toes. Guess I will find out when I see the orthopedist in a week. @Lady. I KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU MEAN re: numb toes stubbing a surface and screaming in pain! I have one of those portable electric chairs for when DH and I want to go shopping/movies. The walk takes too much out of me and we were able to get the electric one through insurance. DH comes home today. I keep my cell phone close to me and have neighbors I can call if I need them. One neighbor picks up the newspaper/mail in the AM and leaves it on the door. I have good pain meds, try to hold off for the most part but I use them without guilt. ![]() @SandyC. DH leaving blood trails?! Gives new meaning to numb toes! |

I hate this plastic cast, it is brutal on my "good" leg because of spasms during the night making my left leg bang around.
In a spasm, my foot flexes and toes spread. It WAS more annoying than painful but now, it has pain. Makes me wonder if the bones will show any healing since there is involuntary movement. I see the orthopedic surgeon again on Thursday. I am going to plead for a smaller cast. Not even sure if one exists. DH and I have made a fashion statement out of the cast to address the hard plastic. The cast sock folds over the top, an ace bandage wraps around the body to cover the various nodes and a sock bootie encases the toe area. Funny how it feels so good to take the cast off and then it starts to not feel good, vulnerable. I am still taking quite a few oxycodone. 3 a day, two if I can handle the pain factor. At least they work. I do not feel high nor am I sleepy. I guess abuse is when people take more than one or two? |
